Most revolutionary bassist using effects?

Ok, sorry in advance if this becomes a mega-thread. Here is my question.

Who really stands out as a bassist always pushing the envelope with effects pedals/units? Someone always turning heads making people say "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SOUND?" Almost like they play effects more than they play their bass.

The Edge seems to be a guitarist like this (first person that comes to mind). Take away the Edge's effects and what are you left with (no offense)?

Virtually flawless technique and excellent composition

When I think of bass+effects, Bootsy comes to mind a lot.

Al Cisneros doesn't use any crazy effects, but his near infinite stack of amps provide the mega-distortion that is heavy yet mellow enough to be appreciated for what it is.

I will say that JC definitely does this better than most mainstream bassists just because I`m constantly shocking people by telling them certain parts in Tool songs are actually the bass and not the guitar. Anyone who can do that is definitely doing something right (...at least in relation to this thread).

Metallica's current Mr. Trujillo has quite a few floor warts too. He thrills you with each and every one extensively during his solo.
