I forgot about the promethian - thought they were discontinued? I checked the manual but no info on input impedance.

I bought the older version with a missing head with the intention of using it with my Clarus. It has a smooth, round tone but doesn’t handle the E string well. It’s pretty limited in what it can do and I much prefer the GK MBX. No, I don’t think the driver is blown because it sounds great on electric.

Same here, they changed the EQ setup on the new amps too. The Graphic Equalizer was eliminated.

It didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted. The pocket was supposed to be on the side and be bigger. But this still fits my Felix and cables

Even through I have not used it that way, a Combo or mountable combination of amp and speaker is nice because it is one piece only bug could be separated if needed.

So AI combos (also with the upshot/mounting bracket/case) and Genz Benz Shuttles are great for that.
Carry an extension cable for the speaker and you can position the cab where needed and the amp where you have the most easy control.

That said, I like my Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T. And I don't need to sorry about repair yet, since they still support their amps from their Genz Benz times as far as I read here.
It's more that I would need to send it overseas from Europe if I ever need it to get repaired.

One hand schlepp is GB shuttle 3.0 - Crazy 8 - Headway EDM 1 pre-amp. If you engage the mid-scoop on the shuttle sounds great with a peizo. I use to use the combo but the C8 is/was worth the upgrade.

Amp and pre-amp go in bass bag and the C8 fits perfectly in the old GB carrying case for the STL 8 version.

OK it's a bit heavier than I thought - with all the gear (all cords, felix, etc) inside it's just under 38lbs.
the bag was custom made by Studio Slips in Sonoma County, CA

Here's my "schleppable non-combo" set up. First photo is instrument with wheels strapped on and backpack with Upshot and Clarus SL. Second shot shows the mic stand and Raxess bracket. Stand goes in the bow pocket of the case, and bracket fits in the backpack.

Maybe because it is 27lbs? Does that qualify as "most schleppable?" Maybe in comparison, but my AI Coda is 22lbs and I didn't mention that one. The Upshot in my post above is 15 lbs with cables.

+1 on the Upshot + Clarus (SL or SIV). Super portable, lots of headroom. Depending on room size, this does it (on both EB and URB).

hey @BobKay, do tell on the URB case, who makes that? love the visibility. I need more of that here in the city. All mu cases are black, I'm a big walking blind spot!

PS for the "KICK butt" flavor go with a BF Two10. (But man on URB the Upshot has more than enough for any gig)

I’ll second (third?) what has been said about the upshot.

I had the Felix / powered MAS18 setup but since moved on to the upshot + clarus.

My Felix+MAS18 was over 30 pounds without the cables or a bag and there was no way I could shlepp it on the subway while wheeling my upright.

I had both setups and the same time and the Felix/MAS18 certainly sounded great — but for my use (small groups, upright) the upshot seemed just as good.

I’m sure the upshot doesn’t get as loud as the 18, but I have been shocked how much air it pushes. Plenty loud for my needs and the upshot + clarus is pretty compact in the backpack.

Case was made by David Messina in Louisville. I live in Floruda, so the yello seems appropriate. Also doubles as a life raft.

A former student who now lives/studies/works in NYC was in town for Aebersold SJW showed me this very rig this year and says it's great for getting around in the city. I didn't get to hear it, but i have no doubt it sounds great. And man, that IS portable!

I appreciate this comment. Most combos sound great on the open G,D, and A strings. The open E is the real test.

There seem to be so many higher end options and so few opportunities to check them out.

At least on my bass, the reason the E is more difficult to dial in (or out) is that the piezo pickup is on the bass wing of the bridge, so the pickup is automatically focused in that area. And unfortunately putting the piezo on the treble wing of the bridge is really a worse answer related to tonal balance. Plus, with my currently preferred strings the E and A strings are really growly so they tend to draw attention to themselves anyway.

I agree though, that E is a real challenge. With my combo amp it's a matter of dialing the whole bass in as closely as possible with EQ, gain and compression, and then modifying my playing technique a little bit in order to bring that E in the rest of the way. It's not horrible, but it does require a little practice.

I've also been experimenting with the amp voicings (instead of the mic setting) that my combo includes, but they tend to reduce total voume and I'm not willing to give up that extra bit of power.

I also find that the amp volume helps me to improve my general technique to reduce fingering nose and other noisy clutter...

With great power comes great responsibility.

Edit (for posterity)... I surprised myself!!! I switched the piezo pickup to the treble wing of the bridge and the problems with dialing in are solved completely!!! Balance through the amp is excellent now!!!

I used a Markbass Micromark for years as a non-car owning bassist, and still do for the odd gig where I'm not driving but have to bring an amp. They're not the most powerful or highest quality amp in the world, but especially with a preamp did the job incredibly well for the price and weight. I can literally pick it up with one finger, and it fits in a large rucksack so I can carry it while wheeling the bass.

Now that I have a car I'm using an Aguilar Tonehammer with a separate cab and I am enjoying the additional power and fidelity, but the tiny Markbass was a good solution for hundreds of gigs

The most schleppable option of all, but only useful in venues big enough to have a PA and decent monitors - I know a couple of bassists who just bring the Aguilar Tonehammer pedal, and send a signal to front of house and get a monitor feed as their 'amp'. That works really well and fits in the bass case...

I travel the subways exclusively and this one sounds real good (in my experience) with a Fishman Full Circle and very portable.
Also comes in three colors!

I use one as well. Excellent.
