Have you ever really listened to Jimi Hendrix basslines? That's all Noel Redding, and he's all over the bass. I have respect for the guy's ability. Take a good listen to All Along the Watchtower, and keep a focused ear or you'll miss it, but he's pulling off some very fast, impressive stuff, and he does similar things in a lot of Jimi songs, you just have to listen close, because unfortunately, he's sometimes really low and buried in the mix. He really is a great bassist, just pay attention.

And very few really count him as one of the original rock greats, when he truly was up there with Entwistle, JPJ, Squire, and all of them.

Oh, Major one, NOEL REDDING. He's fantastic, very powerful, revolutionary, lead-styled, great Fender Jazz Patron.

Would have to agree..mostly though for what he didn't play..love how he 'set the table' and let Jimi do his thing....just think if Victor Wooten played with Jimi....:scowl:..too many notes

I feel Bob babbitt is really underrated.

He's not my total favorite, but Vern Rumsey of Unwound. He really shines on stuff from Repetition and Leaves Turn Inside You with subtle melodies and some powerful freaking grooves. He also has a tone on LTIY that's as gritty and complementary as Geddy Lee's in Moving Pictures but with even more low end, and people consider it a lo-fi record. Message Recieved, Look a Ghost, and October All Over are probably his best examples. He might be my favorite punk-minded bassist, and I've listened to a lot of punk, etc.

Simon Jones from the Verve is awesome man. He comes up with some great riffs. He doesn't play all over the place. He really grooves though. Him and the drummer Salisbury are the tighest rhythm section

already mentioned a bit but seriously juan alderete is amazing.

chi cheng of the deftones. listen to their first two records. not alot of fancy stuff but always good. and his tone, oh his TONE. i love it

phil "landphil" hall of municipal waste and cannabis corpse. ive loved his lines since i started listenint to the waste(who i just saw over the weekend) and he is easily in my top ten with geddy and squire.

dan briggs of between the buried and me. just listen to swim to the moon if you have 18 minutes to spare. he is the only one of the five instruments without a solo in that song and he still blew me away.

jason newstead. not just his work with metallica, listen to doomsday for the deciever by flotsam and jetsam. killer stuff.

I never could get into municipal waste. They are a straight copy of DRI (IMO of course) We even played quite a few gigs with thmein this area. Nice guys but not my cup of tea...

I've always thought Michael Anthony was terribly underrated. Most of the time you don't even really notice his playing, but he does a great job of holding the song down and easing some nice fills in without sounding like he's trying to compete with Eddie.
