He said it would solve a lot of people's problems. Example: A train leaves Chicago travelling east at 90 mph. Another leaves New York travelling west at 60 mph. The west bound train departs 30 minutes before the other. Where do they meet?
Buy one, Put in AC Storage and sell in 30 years for who knows what, but it will be rare!

I laugh at Ibanez's puny attempts to make an unique bass!
I can beat that!
I am going to have custom made semi hollow 13 string 28,6" scale bass with tremollo system and every other string being respectively fretted and unfretted and tuned to the same note.
So you'd have respectively unfretted B-fretted B-unfretted E-fretted E-unfretted A-frettted A, and so on, ending on an unfretted high E.
It would have a piezo pickup for each string both fretted and unfretted as well as 3 separate magnetic pickups for each string.
Each pickup would have an on/off switch as well as a tone and volume knob, and then going into a build in pre amp where there beside a master volume knob also would be a high tone control, a bass control, and a stacked mid control for setting the mid frequency and adjusting it and then a LP and HP filter control knob.
Further more it would have a build in overdrive/distortion and envelope filter effect with full parameter control including on/off switch and mix.
This is how I imagine the shape:
As fret markers there would be small printed portraits of all the American presidents minus Donald Trump, who would feature with a big printed portrait stretched to fit the body shape of the bass.
I would call it "The All American Trump Bass" and have it produced in China!

I'm not sure who would need something like that.
Someone who wants it as his sole instrument to own both fretted and f/less? Why, if he plays both on a regular basis would he not need both basses for his, say, 50/50 repertoire? Such a bassist surely appreciates the difference between playing this bass and the two distinct instruments.
Conversely, why would anyone need a fretted and fretless bass if he were to use on one song out of, say, 20? This guys would probably borrow a fretless - that is, if he can't afford having an extra bass sitting there collecting dust. In fact, he might probably look for an alternative to get the quasi fretless tone the band he's in would be happy with. Especially since if you're good enough on fretless you own one. Come on.
Playing both instruments in one song can sound great. But it seems more like a gimmick you get tired of real fast.
Unless it's just the perfect instrument for you and for what you play and you will get this bass right away because it helps you create your very own signature tone.

So, Ibanez, what's the marketing angle here?
ps: I obviously voted 'no' for the above mentioned reasons plus, I don't like the look of it. But that can be address and it's very personal anyway. I do however respect and appreciate the effort of doing something different and wish more brands where to do take a chance and venture into uncharted waters.
But I feel this attempt is too far removed from the real world.

Just for fun, because they can.
It's not as if this is replacing every other model in their inventory. They had a weird idea, they put it into a very limited production for a short period of time, good or bad it will get people paying Ibanez some attention. They'll sell a few but won't make a profit on it, but that's OK, there's more than enough money coming in from other areas.
The people who buy one will most likely be collectors who will play around with it for a few weeks, then case it up and forget they have it. Maybe a YouTube video will pop up now and then.
It's just for fun. Lighten up.
