No worries. I'll be the first to admit that yeah, they do look...strange. If you don't like talking to people, they definitely aren't for you, 'cause when you stop, you will draw a crowd. It's taken me a long time to get out of a gas station, more than once...And they are definitely not for people with short inseams (although the new ones are available with a "low" frame). Mine was OK with the Parellis on it, but the Metzlers definitely have me up on my toes; and it's not a good bike around town to start with. Progressive makes shocks that are 32mm shorter than "Stock" (mine has the trick Ohlins shocks); they'll be my Christmas present to myself, I think. In any case, if you're Jonesing for an RT, I can't fault your choice. They're just much too "Touring Bike" for me; my old GSA satisfies my Sport Touring Jones waay better.:)

1. V-twins that make 200hp@ 10,000 rpm don't work well at all for a "cruise down the Interstate @ 75" bike. For a real touring bike, that engine would be a disaster.
2. Touring bikes in this country, are big bikes - and, even unladen, can weigh close to 1,000 lbs. Which, unfortunately, means a big, torquey engine. Ducati would have to come up with a completely new engine for a viable touring bike.
I suppose you're right. I like to think my 1000DS engine has immense torque and in the 440 pound Multistrada, it works well. But add another 200 pounds or so and I can see it wouldn't do. And yeah, it would be too peaky. I reckon the 4 valvers are this way but more. Although I've not ridden one. I was thinking tuning would do it but nah, needs a torque mill. Ducs don't really like to run below 4 grand or so.

Here are mine...

I turned 50 this year and decided I wanted to ride again, after a 25 + year absence. I bought a Honda CBR 500, which was nice, but I quickly realized that I need to sit up straight - I mean really straight - if I want to ride all day without back & neck pain. So I traded it in on a Kawi Versys 650. Little more power, little more suspension travel, and a nice upright seating position. Here's a pic on Skyline Drive from last week:

The local BMW dealer got one of these in trade two weeks ago; '10 K1300GT. Basically the sane version of my stupid-fast K1200S; only 165 HP, vs. 178. It's spotless; <20 k miles on it; and the previous owner was obviously a sport-tourer with the money to do it right; Nav IV GPS, inner bag liners, tank bag, RAM mounts for accessories, etc. And, this is a pretty rare color, too. Have to admit, I'm very tempted - and I have the money -, but... red is not my favorite color (rare or not), and IMO, the gas tank is just too small (5 gal.). If I stay on the Interstates, it would be OK, but that's not what this bike is for. But, maybe that's just the 8.3 gal. tank on my GS Adventure talking...I'm getting too old to ride for more than a couple of hours at a whack, anyway...:)

Nice. I wouldn't mind having one of those. Problem is that the Versys, like I think every other mid-size sporty-touring machine out there, have gone to the 'adventure' style. This looks cool, but it's like crossover SUV-thingies: nobody ever takes them off-road anyway, so what you end up with is a lot of height you don't need. I'm short. Not only do I not need the height, I don't want it either.
