Heard it on record and have heard it live with Babbitt playing modern passive P/J/ Bass with roundwounds and mute. Both sound like the Motown sound to me. The feel and mix. and mature players that know their place. Oh Ya, and POWER !

Exactly. If you've seen SITSOM you've seen the scene where they go "A lot of people have tried to figure out what the Motown sound is..." And then he gets the musicians to play a groove and says "That's the secret to the Motown sound."
