Can anyone please give me any tips on how to create a decent motown bass line as i need to this for a music course?

Better yet, listen to lots of Jamerson, it's hard not to cause he is Motown

Indeed James Jamerson is the sound of Mowtown Bass. Try a you tube search for " James Jamerson isolated bass" But that said he's also pretty dam hard to emulate. For a more stripped down but equally solid and soulful approach you might want to check out Duck Dunn's work on the old Staxx records/Booker T & The MGs. I belive there is also a book out there called "What Duck Dunn"
