Moving back to Florida. So many basses...

I have 12 basses, one ukulele and one guitar. I will sell 2 or 3. I will take the necks off my Fenders and Fender types. Two have set necks.

I have no flight cases. I want to bring maybe four with me and worry about the rest later.

Ideas?

Shipping a dozen or so basses the traditional way seems like an arm and a leg.

I was wondering if there is a no frills super slow, cheap way and a get a bulk rate as well?

It'd be cheaper to get a small uhaul then to ship that many, last two basses I shipped were $110+ each. Maybe divide the driving so you wouldn't be so tired or leave some at a secure friend's place until later. No easy solution without spending money

I'd say USPS but I know you want to actually get your basses at the end of the day ;P. Honestly, you're either going to have to pay a person or a company to get em to you. If you know anyone with a UPS business account, there are substantial discounts there. Shipping a bass to Florida from MA is around $40 a pop post discount, multiply that by 10 (or double up some in boxes, it can be done safely!) and you're looking at about $400 ($600-700 without discount) or so. That's pretty cheap on the whole spectrum of moving costs. I'd think that paying someone for their time, fuel, lodging and a rental van/truck from NY/FL would be much costlier. IMO, it's probably best to bite the bullet or maybe sell an additional bass to cover the cost.

The cheapest way to ship large items is Greyhound. I've shipped a tuba via FedEx and it cost me $400+. I've shipped a similar sized tuba via Greyhound at $80. So I would suggest putting 3-4 basses (or more) packed securely in a box (about the dimension of a tuba or drier box), have 3 or 4 of these boxes and ship them Grey Hound. If I were in your specific situation and was not driving, this is definitely the option I would choose. I just shipped the BODY of a bass from Alabama to California and it cost me $44 UPS. So yeah, the "traditional" way would be too expensive.

My clothes will be pared down and go in suitcases. I have some books I will keep. The rest is garage sale and/or charity.

Unless all your gear is sentimental, rare, or valuable, I'd consider selling all of it and starting over once you get to FL.

I am driving 7 hours to buy a bass cabinet soon....I dont think I would I would blink twice over renting a U-Haul trailer to bring my basses with me or go get them....but I have about 20

I have shipped upright basses via greyhound in big cardboard boxes. If you take it to the Greyhound station and pick it up at the receiving station it’s not very expensive. I shipped one from Philadelphia to Michigan it was about $150. btw how are you getting yourself to Florida? Are you just taking a suitcase? It might be even cheaper to ship your instruments greyhound if you’re on the bus with them. Doesn’t sound like much fun but it would probably be a very economical way to get you and everything else there.
