iRiver has Ogg Vorgis support so I assume it works with Linux. There have been firmware issues though...look into it at that forum.,

I mean that the prominent complaint heard about iRiver products is that the company rarely to never updates their firmware to take care of bugs or known issues.

However, looking over at their site it looks like they may have finally listened to all the complaints because they've released a lot of updates this year. It may no longer be an issue, which makes the iRiver more attractive IMO if that's the case.

My friend uses his cell phone as his MP3 player. He bought a 256mb chip so he can store lots of songs on it. I don't know how this goes about draining battery out of the phone. I wouldn't do this if it were to drain the phone battery. And I do think that the most cost efficient, and probably the best MP3 player is the Ipod.

As for iPods with Linux drivers, sure it's possible! I have no direct experience with it though. I would imagine support to be questionable at best though.

I have an ipod, bc its easy to use and is small. battery lasts about 8-9 hours and its fine for me.

Right now it looks like The Iriver.

A.) It just mounts itself as another hard drive

B.) straight mp3 (up to 320 KBPS!) recording (although I still might use minidisc...)

C.) Allows me to view text files. I think this might be handy for proof-reading things...

I suggest an iPod. iTunes is an amazing program-- very easy to use. Also, they don't use MP3s. Most of my files are AAC.
