MPA to target Tab Sites

Bruce , you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.
I will agree that tab and tab alone is bad but a little in moderation never hurt anybody. If players who use it as a sole means of studying music would learn to read to at least some degree I feel the would have a revalation as music would begin to make more sense to them, they would actually get it.My current instructor has no problem with tab but encourages reading/theory as well. I was sick of not being able to play something without hearing it first,learning to read as well as theory study has opened up a new world for me.

I guess part of the problem is that being an American I don't like things taken away from us. No one will ever convince me that this isn't about money and the artists will never see it, lawyers will. That has become a real problem over here, lawyers run rampent, file suits and take most of the proceeds as legal fees, look at tobbacco settlements! Billions of dollars and lawyers have taken 2/3. This will be no different.It is not about tab ,it's about money!

I don't see it as a Tab vs. Theory/Notation dichotomy.

I see it as : Tab vs. "Using Your ears"!!

I think the damage is done, when you give up trying to play by ear and run to look on the internet every time, instead of persisting with trying to work it out yourself - that's what's hindering development!!

Well, this is how I see it.

I own the "bass tab white pages", and I think it's a great resource, and tabs in that form are extremely useful. However, I find that even though tabs CAN and DO help beginning players, they can also be incredibly debilitating; case in question:

if a part is too complicated to work out by ear, i wouldn't trust an internet tab. tabs in magazines or books would be where to look for far more trustworthy tabs..

this ban= greedy fat cats after money, sure, but I don't see it as harming musicians.

One area where I believe that tab can improve a bass players ability over ear and notation combined is in teaching you to use alternate fingering patterns.

i.e. you may have built up a habit of using a certain fingering combination. A tab of the song can give you an alternate fingering pattern for you to learn.

Ear and notation will not do this.

I've come across countless examples where I have learned a song by ear and then later get a hold of a tab which has the same notes but a different fingering pattern.

By learning to play new patterns you are broadening your development.

Big brother is now taking our tabs!

I'm over 30 years old..I work too may hours in a day, I don't have the time or money to go through all this BS..can't i just get a tab, crack a beer, and play some covers with my buddies? I'm not trying to play Portrait of Tracy...just have fun with my friends and play some covers man!

So I have to learn how to read music now..spend more money on music?

I shoudl learn anyway..but it's still some gestapo BS

MXtabs ruled..what about drum tabs...I mean common, it's the same as drum music. The dude that owned MTX should sell the tabs to someone in RUSSIA.
