I liked the sound of the B-peg that you posted. Some of it was alittle farty or too middy but, thats exactly what may work in a band. It also sounds like it feels good to play. Seems to have alot of untouched clean sound blended in too. Of course, I plan to run a compressor in front of it and my basses are really loud so, it may sound completely different.

smallsound/bigsound F*** Overdrive

Alright....I know, I know...I said this about the B3K....but THIS overdrive really is the one that some people will LOVE and some people will LOATHE. It's not the most versatile when it comes to different voicings...so it's either the tone you're looking for....or...it's....not.

But I love it. Fat. Gritty. Gnarly. Pretty much everything smallsound/bigsound makes gives me this post apocalyptic Mad Max kinda vibe. I don't know....it's just so dirty. Oooof. But it rocks. And it goes from a light OD all the way into blistering fuzz territories. If you're on a tight budget and need a good OD/Fuzz that can cover both of those ranges, I for sure recommend this guy.

It's built well, and I can attest from personal experience, Brian (owner/builder) is awesome. He'll be on tour with his band (Cymbals Eat Guitars) and still take the time to answer phone calls and get back with you on things. Really great customer service.

A cool "wow it can do that" feature would be the blown amp simulation. It's on a momentary footswitch and...aptly named...simulated a blown amp. There's two different settings on it that gives you a difference to the crackle and sputter. Really wicked.

Anyways. There's not really much more to say. Awesome pedal. Awesome builder. HUGE range with the gain. You'll either love the sound or not dig it. Give it a lesson.

So. About to revive this guy. I'm playing through a Glockenklang Blue Soul, now. Amp's a bit different. And I've got four high profile ODs heading my way. Figure I'll try to start this thing back up as they get here. I'll be looking at:


Swell B-Peg - coming back from MikeO with a the lower gain mod and I'll do some tube rolling with a vintage 1963 Mullard 12AT7.

Darkglass B3K - Third time's a charm? Completely different amp, so we'll see. This will be a US made one.

Earthbound Audio Iron Pig - Had more anticipation over on ilovefuzz.com than here, we'll see if it's overhyped or if TB just needs to hang up the VTs and get with it.

The new Darkglass Vintage Microtubes - OK. This guy isn't technically on its way to me. But it will be mine. Oh yes. It WILL be mine.


Personally, I'm looking for two to fit on my board. One to give me a modern sound (I haven't ruled out a Dr Sci Elements, here, either) and one to get me a more colored vintage tone (something that can be gritty but can also do a nice clean tube sound, as well). I'll post clips and reviews as soon as I get them.

This is the thread I have been looking for. Just started jonesing for some overdrive a few weeks ago. This is pushing me in the right direction. Reviews and clips are drawing out the distinctions and helping me understand what will fit my sound. Looking forward to the new pedal reviews.
