MTD 534 Neck thru

Was there a sound in particular you were looking for that Mike's usual pickups (the ones built by Bartolini to Mike's specs) couldn't deliver (I'm guessing yes)? If so, what was that sound?

Actually, I was after the Tobias tone that I have in #708. The finish he used in 1988 is totally different than what he uses now. In addition, Tobias #708 was a Basic 5, Eastern Maple solid wings as opposed to a fancy top. I love the characteristics of Maple, but I wanted a fancy top without losing the tone that the solid maple gave me.

Here is what happens when a foam drum dampening panel falls over just right, hits a Hercules guitar stand just right and pushes an MTD 635 thru neck down to a carpeted stage face down, then the dampening panel falls on top of it! I'm still crying after three weeks. It's going to the MTD Hospital this week! Dr. Mike Tobias says he may be able to get it to the point where I can put strings on it again. Folks .... get insurance on your high end gear. Something told me to get it about 2 weeks prior to this happening. Picture before .... and the neck with the break. :bawl:

Oh that hurts... Another reason I'm partial to bolt-ons. ;)

I believe he has tooled machines that do most of the carving. Because this was 17mm spacing, the neck on this is 1 3/4 at the nut, and I think he used a different truss rod as well. The specs on this bass are more similar to his original Tobias than they are to his MTDs. It is also neck thru as opposed to the bolt on necks he now uses.
