I have an MTD 535 fretless (ash with bubinga top, wenge neck with ebony fingerboard). I have a Tobias Killer B 6 that I love, and this just plays and sounds like 15 years of improvement since Michael made that one!

Tone, sustain, playability, flexibililty, plus the build and finish quality are absolutely top notch.

If that is the bass your gassing for, it will inspire to play more and move forward and you can save up the money, go for it. I doubt you'll have second thoughts once you get your hands on one. Buy second hand if you can find one.

Thumbs up on investigating the woods used. before you buy. Mike is outstanding for answering questions and if you find a used one, get some details and then call him to see what he thinks its strengths will be.

I have a MTD Kingston KZ5 (I know it is not a "real" MTD USA) it is the "Low prized model" I gig 6-10 times a moth and it has never disappointed me! tone is perfect and it feels very balanced. It replaced an Original Tobias Killer-B (S/N 2444). other than a lower output, it sounds the same! the 535 must be superior in hardware and tone making it perfect for the road! go for it!

I second this idea. This bass is simply excellent in every way (including the electronics). And of course there is the Kingston KZX option with the Barts worth considering. Even used, a domestic MTD is a sizable chunk of change for anybody. Maybe its worth considering an import for now, at least. And if the gigs keep coming and if you're no longer feeling aprehensive, maybe you could invest in a US MTD with your Kingston handy as a quality back up.

I have a kz6 love it, in fact I think I love it more then I loved my conklin

I will consider a 735 one day if it happens to pop up on here one day or a Roscoe 3007 my dream basses until then maybe a Kz5 as a back up yea they're that good that I'd back up the same bass just one less string.

After seeing some of the MTDs on this forum, I'm convinced that they are the best looking basses available. Wow!

I'd like to own (and deserve) an MTD 635 by the time I'm 30 -- which means I'll really have to improve my skills!

I know how you feel about the "deserve" thing but, really, it's silly. "Deserve" has nothing to do with it. How good you are has nothing to do with it. All that matters is that you enjoy the instrument and feel that your money has been well-spent. So much about an instrument is fit and tone - not to mention quality of construction. If an instrument suits your needs and desires, regardless of whether or not you are a beginner or a pro, than that is an instrument you should consider. If you simply can't afford a given instrument, then fine, but otherwise I'd say get the best instrument you can - it will inspire you to play better and you can rest assured that any audible shortcomings are attributable to you. MTDs are notorious for not letting players get away with sloppy technique!

I'm really itching for a usa mtd 535, but i'm having a hard time justifing the money for one. I gig 4-8 times a month. Does anyone here that has one) or a 435 or 635) regret spending the cash on one?

First let me say that it's a GREAT BASS and one of the easiest basses you'll ever play. As far as regrets go it's a lot of money especially for working musicians like ourselves. Lets face it your not gonna get rich playing music for a living at least I haven't yet. But trust me when your gigging every Fri and Sat night with your MTD you won't have one regret about buying it!!!

I do agree with another TB'er I'd try to find a used one. I paid $2500.00 for mine used a few years back it looked brand new.
