My MTD 534 sounds similar. Every MTD is unique. If you can find a 534, especially with 17mm spacing jump on it.

I took a chance on one of these back in May. Bought it from the GC used inventory knowing that I could have 45 days to return it. It's been a really great bass. My main is a Sadowsky MV5 with single coils and this Kingston AG5 holds its own and offers a different flavor as I didn't previously have anything with A. soap-bars or B. modern pickup locations. I've since decided that it will be a keeper and bought the Hipshot USA hardware from MTD which just made it that much better. Mine is the older, not quite so purple, version.

Right! I've only played a few USA MTDs. A couple didn't wow me but the last one sounded fantastic. I would have to play before buying.

MTD’s are so cool; they get that scoop like a Jazz, but sound totally different.

For anyone curious, those pickups are our proprietary USA Bartolini reverse split coils. They're a pretty unique sound for split coils imo.

I own this same model and it has begrudgingly become my number one. I say “begrudgingly” because I am an old school Fender bass guy to my core, but my MTD is just a better instrument in every possible regard. I look forward to trying an American 535 someday, but I don’t see how it could possibly be that much better than my Kingston Andrew Gouché 5.

I agree with you on the Kingstons. They’re so much better than most basses I have and rival my Dingwall. One thing I really like is the “zero” fret. That should be a standard item with all major manufacturers.

I wanted mine to be a replica of the original US version and asked about purchasing the Wenge “slap ramp” that’s on them. As I recall it was around $200 and was advised it wouldn’t fit the Kingston version. So ordered some Wenge and made one.
