MTD Kingston Artist Fretless 5 string

Well, the MTD is a very different sounding bass than a fretless jazz bass.

First, a multi-pickup bass will always be more versatile than a single pickup bass like the Artist. To be fair, you may want to compare a jazzbass with the Heir model, which is MM+J; two pickups.

I have the Artist 5 fretless and really like it. It's quite versatile for a single pickup. The MM is really well placed on this one and the preamp is ok for the price.

I've just ordered a Bartolini pickup for mine. I'll see if it works well with the stock preamp. If not, I'll wire it passive and use my Aguilar DB924.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the stock bass, I just like to upgrade my basses when possible. The playability and construction of this bass is incredible. I choose mine in a stock of five basses of the same model and color and all five played extremely well.

I also think the Artist 5 fretted is one of the best buy in its category.
