MTD Norm Stockton or Ibanez Mode: would you know the difference without looking?

My comment wasn’t meant as a slam at @FatOwlBass. It’s just stating the same thing you just posted. Nothing more, nothing less. He and I obviously have different tastes and certain manufacturers give us what we prefer. That’s true about most of us.

PS: I’m enjoying the journey! 😄

I was not slamming you, I was posting in admiration of your attitude.😊 You sounded very positive to me.

I am not offended. I did re think my reply and perhaps misunderstood the assignment. What I or anyone likes is not the main point. The question I believe was between the two basses, can you tell a huge tonal difference. I will listen to the video a few more times.

The MTD has sharper highs and snap. The upper midrange has that soap bar growl and burpee finger style tone. The Ibanez sounds slightly less bright slapped and the low midrange is more pronounced than the MTD. MTD is a bit more defined than the Ibby here. The Ibanez sounds fatter and groovier.
Both sound great but in different ways.

This is not a critique on what you're hearing or what you said, but we had this discussion a little in the MTD thread recently.

The term 'soapbars' is kind of meaningless. The pickups on the NSJ are technically reverse Ps. They're very narrow and have blade style pole pieces. Mike's concept for our custom Barts is that he wanted to come up with something that approaches the best of both worlds from a J & a P - you get the low end response of a P with the upper clarity of a J.

This is a good video btw - the Mode sounds awesome. Def need to try one next time I see one in the wild.

It seems there are so many different options these days on similar themes and styles.

The Sire M5 really does appear to be based on the MTD, both the body shape and headstock style, but probably does have some Ken Smith influence in there too. Even the colour is very Norm Stockton. I don't think that is a coincidence.


It sure does sound good though, especially in this guy's hands.
