So, you have a head and cab you like (Ampeg SVT, Mesa 800, Aguilar, Markbass...) Or you have a preamp pedal that you interface the PA or use for recording (Mesa, Ampeg, Aguilar, SansAmp, Markbass, Noble...)
You like your sound.
But you would like to add an FX unit that does basic distortion, chorus, octave, flange....has a decent tuner and is build well for road abuse. You do not want amp or speaker emulations or any of that garbage...you like your sound!
Anything on the new or used market that fits that bill?

Nothing forces you to use amps models and cab sims with a HX Stomp, you can use it as a multi fx if you want (it's what I do).

Oh, and do you want to run more than one effect at a time? I'd go with the HXFX if you did want to.

The Boss GT-1B is a great unit. You can choose to omit amp and speaker simulations from the signal chain IIRC

I've used the zoom ms60B and had good luck. Can't say that I use it to color my tone very much. Didn't know there was a ms60B+ till I read gregmon70s post. Guess I'm slowly but surely getting out of touch with the real world.

I love my Zoom MS-60B+. It sounds great with all of my basses and through every amp I've used it with.

I used the 60b for years. Great pedal. I recently got the 60b+ and I have to say it sounds better than the regular 60b IMHO. Not quite as many effects, but still plenty to go around. Sound quality a lot better on the preamps IMO. I am pretty impressed with it. And you can string along up to 60 effects in a chain on it (if the DSP lets you).

But me? If I size wasn't an issue and all I wanted was effects, HXFX all the way.

Ok... just to be clear...I'm trying to downsize. The last think I need is more temptation ;)

I do this with a Zoom BN3. I got it in a trade and when I went through it's presets... I hated them all. Then I started editing and realized they all had amp sims, cab sims, eq. So I cleared all that stuff and started making patched with just one, sometimes two effects, no modeling. And it sounds good, very much like having single pedals, but with more options. My clean patch is a blank one, nothing in the chain. I build out banks so each has the clean, then two other patches to suit the stuff the cover band I'm in plays. Drive heavy and light, octave, synth bass, a flanged out patch for a specific tune. I play clean 80% of the time but have those sounds for specific moments when they add something.

You can skip the amp and cab sims on most multi-FX units.

Boss GT-1000 Core is compact, solid, has gobs of CPU, tons of effects. $600 new.

Zoom makes a lot of affordable multi-FX with great sounds, though CPU is a bit limited. Zoom B1 Four is $100 new. Zoom B2 is $250 and includes XLR out, a total steal.
