Multi FX pedal only

It’s been said but I’ll echo it. I’m sure the hx effects would work well, but if I was adding something to a pedalboard I’d go with the hx stomp just for the size. It has lots of good, quality effects and you don’t have to use the amps/cabs obviously but they’d be there for you to mess around with if you ever did decide to. Lots of people only use for effects on their boards.

I use a quad cortex now but I still have the hx stomp as a backup unit. I didn’t get rid of it for a reason, I really do think it’s that good. Totally useable as a full bass rig or just for effects added to your board, and doesn’t take up but 2-3 pedals worth of space? No brainer!

If I didn't need amp sim, I could have used a Zoom MS-60B+ (or 70CDR+ if you don't need overdrive), or the HX stomp. I rely on the amp sim as my stage preamp, so I use an Ampero. I wouldn't recommend any older Zoom, since they've got terrible overdrive IME.

I love my HX Stomp XL. I added it to a pedal board with a handful of unique pedals but recently started using it solo for one of my projects. Head>Cab>HX Stomp XL. it’s a lot of fun.

HX FX (Effects) may be what you are looking for. All effects, no emulators or other non-effects stuff. Well, it has some synth sounds and drone/pedal note options but overall it's just the effects portion of the other HX models. I have been using one and had nothing but compliments from every band I've taken it out with. I have a big complicated board of boutique pedals but the HX FX sounds like 90% as good and is way easier to set up, use, carry around, and takes up far less floor space.

I do this with a Zoom BN3. I got it in a trade and when I went through it's presets... I hated them all. Then I started editing and realized they all had amp sims, cab sims, eq. So I cleared all that stuff and started making patched with just one, sometimes two effects, no modeling. And it sounds good, very much like having single pedals, but with more options. My clean patch is a blank one, nothing in the chain. I build out banks so each has the clean, then two other patches to suit the stuff the cover band I'm in plays. Drive heavy and light, octave, synth bass, a flanged out patch for a specific tune. I play clean 80% of the time but have those sounds for specific moments when they add something.

Same here. Trying to rein-in the presets is a lost cause...clear everything and start from scratch. Used B3n's are dirt cheap, too.

If you want one effect at a time, the HX One.
If you want more, the HXFX.

I am currently using an HX Stomp and not using cab sims. I mostly use the "Noble" model. I bellieve that is available in the One/HXFX as it is not labeled as an amp but as a drive/distortion effect.

As someone above stated, if you like your tone, and don't really NEED effects, maybe leave well enough alone. I was using my Stomp as my synth so I needed all the things. But I went back to using a keyboard so now my Stomp is kind of over kill. I'm keeping it as it's paid for and the synth presets could be used as backup or if I don't want to bring my keyboard. I only use chorus and drive and only on occasion. I could probably get by without them. What I do use is the pitch shift for 1/2 step down so I don't need a special bass. Really handy.

Before I went Stomp I had a great analog set up and my bass sounded the best ever. Empress ParaEQ Deluxe II to an Empress Bass Compressor to a REDDI. It was a KILLER tone. It's tempting to go back and get an HX One for the Pitch Shift.

I shouldn't have come here. Now I'm debating my options...I think a Khan tube DI fits under a Nano board....not as bulky as a REDDI but still tube goodness.

Maybe 10-15 years ago, I would have agreed. But tech has come a long way, and some of these units really do sound very good.
Agreed. While I may miss the "feel" of my REDDI, the tone from my Stomp is VERY good. I did an A/B between the 2 at a gig and the band didn't know I swapped them. We have good gear, IEM's and all are trained musicians. That's pretty telling. I'm sure the G.A.S. will pass soon enough and I'll stick with my Stomp. Small. Light. Versatile. Paid for. Right now I have it set up as basically 3 effects (pitch shift for Eb tuning, chorus and drive) running to a "Noble" mode. No cab sim. No one is complaining.

I love my Zoom stuff. I have the B3n, the G11 and the MS-60B+.

I have an hx stomp and that's cool too. I like the sounds I can get on the Zoom stuff better, but the HX stuff is more versatile.

I've also done the all analog boutique board, and I've had no regrets sticking with multi-fx these days.

I’m in the process of auditioning a HX effects and so far I’m liking it quite a bit. Have spent most of my playing as an “instrument to amp” guy, and I’ve also built out The Big Board (tm). No cab sims and I’m doing dynamics and dirts through pedals but it seems to strike a nice balance and is way more compact. There is some learning curve, but the interface is pretty good.
