Murder Hornet: They're here !

I wonder if these things are any relation or the same as the hornets that eat cicadas. I have what seems to be a pretty sizable nest of these things in my back yard in Md. They are huge (about 2 inches) but they seem to pretty much ignore me when I'm cutting the grass and I go over top of where their nests are all the time. Above ground there is a little mound of dirt about six to eight inches in diameter with about a 1/2" diameter hole in it and I have seen them dragging cicadas down into them.

Yep, kinda related but really only in the way that they are both wasps. And scary huge.

My first thought when I ran across the news article earlier this week was that we are approaching the cicada hawk season and the stupid fear-mongering media was going to trigger a bunch of false sightings.

The cicada wasp is definitely huge and scary..... But ultimately harmless. The males don't even have stingers and the females just one which they need to kill the cicada they intend to plant their eggs in. They are basically the most docile wasp around, despite being so intimidating.

When my son was a toddler I had a bit of a population around the yard. I had a couple sightings within a few days and as expected googled the crap out of this freaking UFO buzzing about my kids playset.

They dont even eat cicadas (if I remember that right); just stun them with their one stinger and drag them underground to plant their egg. The larva feeds on the cicada and the cycle starts over.

If a murder hornet got into a fight with a killer bee, which one would win? Would the murder hornet try to behead the killer bee? Or would the killer bee sting the bejabbers out of the murder hornet? I for one would like to know.

I really hate that people put bugs or animals in confined spaces, let them brutalize one or both and call it natural. I know we all hate murder hornets and I'd take out a nest if I found one but I would not try to be intentionally or Unnecessarily cruel to them.

I would love to flamethrow these things, I have a bad time already with a lot of Yellowjackets here in Oregon that I am already deathly allergic to.
Do not want to find out if these Hornets will also be able to Murder me.
