I was referred to the site this morning. I typically use GP7 but this looks like a winner. For those of you who aren't aware, check it out. Think Sibelius or Finale.

Agreed. MuseScore is awesome and pretty easy/intuitive to learn. I’ve used Sibelius for years but now in a couple band projects where we email/google drive charts back and forth and everyone can use this to create and edit.

It’s good and it’s FREE!

i tried using it for a bit when i was between software programs. it was not 'intuitive' for me, however, so i bought sibelius and haven't looked back. i may give it another look based on your endorsement (some of the other cats i play with might like it). thanks.

Sibelius is still by far the best out there IMO. I'd recommend it first. But for the cost, MuseScore has been a blessing in my band projects over the past 2 years.

i agree: the fact that others (all of us) could email files to each other is cool --- can't do that with sibelius in either band.

I plan on spending a little time with it. There are quite a few new features coming out in v. 3.0. Open source folks are not slacking when it comes to continual improvements. If so, it will be greatly appreciated. Some of the threads are encouraging. My point is, I guess, is that for free it will be a great starter for those venturing into writing scores. Also it would be a great ice breaker for learning theory with hands on notation.

I had no idea it was out there.

In Sibelius you can export in (music)XML. This can be imported in other programs. I don't know which programs are compatible though

you're right of course, but getting 7-15 people to agree on those programs is its own form of wankery.

I have used Sibelius in the past, up to v 5, and really loved it for my chamber music scores. That was when I was using Windows. I have since moved to Mac. And since then Sibelius was bought by Avid. I am no longer supported and now they have a weird pricing scheme.
In my current band I’ve been writing down notes on manuscript, creating a chord chart with certain sections written out. Not all of the band members are fluent in standard notation so this little system works. I’d like to have a way to do this on a proper score sheet so it will be a little easier to read during rehearsals (or gigs, if need be).
A chart may look something like this:
Intro: B E C Eb
Verse: B E C B Eb A
Riff: (a part in standard notation here)

Would Musescore work for creating a rudimentary chart like this?

That is fascinating! I would actually enjoy reading that more than tab (I like tab to work out fingerings sometimes, if it’s available).
I’d have to study up on your system and run through a fair number of the songs in order to get it down. But, yeah, that’s really cool.
I can see it also helping when I start throwing some of my tunes at the other guys.

I have about 600 total songs written out - about half in older versions of that system though. I can fit a whole song on one landscape iPad screen .

It's somewhat similar to ABC Notation but I started using/developing mine back about 1980. abc | home

I don't "do" tab BTW...

I’m using Musescore at the moment (new Mac won’t register old Sibelius). It’s ok but I don’t love it. Hubby is thinking about Dorico, I’m considering Presonus (cheaper!).
