Music Man Bongo 5?

Hey there!

I've been looking into getting another bass and have been looking at music man basses (specifically Bongo series [of course]) but no music stores around me carry these basses so I was wondering what some peoples opinions are of it who've tried and/or owned these basses.

I have owned one and they rule. I sold mine on eBay . You can get one for a good price there. Under 850.00 . If you buy one in a store you will pay a lot more. Why did I sell mine... because I have a G&l . But if I didn't own the g&l first I would have loved The music mann ...It's like being in love with your wife and meeting a new girl. She looks good and sounds good . But your all reedy married .

I recently traded my Bongo 5 for a Jazz 5, however, that doesn't mean that Bongos aren't awesome. They just aren't my preferred flavor of awesome. They are very nice basses, sturdy and well-built, very comfortable to play, and they will fit in just about style of music you can think of. There is no reason to recommend against owning one.

The 4 band eq is very very flexible, and the HH option (I assume the most popular pickup config) is really flexible too. Great basses with a sound of their own.

They don't do "old school passive" well, but if you're looking at a Bongo, are you looking for "old school passive"? :) Plus, once the band gets going, a lot of that nuance in sound no longer matters all that much. To me, at least.

They have a broad, modern, and deep sound that is unlike any other bass I have played.

I use a Bongo HH5er and I love it. I can get a lot of different tones from it, it did take some time to find my sound, but in the mean time I found others that are very useful. A bongo can sound very big. I sat in for a friend until he got to the gig, and his guitar player, and sound man were blown away by my sound, and I was using his Mesa set up. They said my sound was so much bigger and deeper than his, but I still had crystal clear highs, and my notes were articulate. I will say this, a Bongo is not for everyone!

One day while I was in a GC I was trying out a Warwick $$ 5 string and loved the tone. Thought the tone of a bass couldn't get any better. Then I tried the Bongo 5 HH and was proven wrong. Greatest tone I have ever herd! It will get any tone you need for any style of music you play. I didn't have the money to get it but wish I did. Plays as good as it sounds too.

Kind of the lone dissenter here, but I do not like them at all. To my eyes, ears, and hands they're ugly, sound lifeless and bland with no personality, and just feel awkward. That said, plenty of people seem to like them and every EB bass I've ever tried just does not sound or feel good in my hands, so my opinion may be worth what you paid for it :)

Give me a Spector or Warwick any day.
