Hum. My Ray has a Bartolini.... Well, I love it lolol. Best of luck. Oh, but I am thinking of one designed especially for a Jazz bass.

Jim is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, their prices are superb and they ship faster than anyone I've ever bought anything online from (got some Hipshot stuff from them, was listed in FedEx system a few hours later, arrived in California from Maine 2 days later with standard shipping). I get everything I can from them, they are everything one hopes for in a shopping experience: small local business, superb customer support, deep knowledge, shockingly great prices and more. I've got GAS to change a pickup and preamp in a Ray4 myself and waiting for some items to be in stock at BestBassGear as I'd rather wait and get it from them instead of anywhere else since I'm in no rush.

Hi! I would just like plug our fellow Talkbassmember @LowEndLobster . He has created a YouTube series where he has a showdown of different Stingray preamp/pickup combinations (mostly on a per brand basis). Highly recommended, and I must say the EMG combo sounds surprisingly sweet!

As a 5 month new "player", I quickly admit that I have no idea about what MM tone/sound should be. However, for my first bass I chose a Indo Ray34, installed a East pre and Nostrand PUPs. The sound that comes out of this bass blows me away. I truly love practicing with my uniquely mine entry level bass and I'm hooked for life...
Nice mod mate, love that bass, I have one just like it. Mine is about to get the East 2 band and the Aguilar M4 pickup....
Looks like a SUB Ray4 to me, but you can't go wrong with the East preamp. Can't comment on the Nordstrand pickup but they get a lot of love...
Not home to check but you're probably right, a SUB Ray4, to confusing. It was the cheapest one, lol. Still love the heck out of it!!
It’s the only SBMM bass with a Jazz width neck. If you want that on a proper EBMM, you have to order and SLO Special Stingray or buy a proper EBMM Sterling. £2k upwards. Modding an SUB Ray 4 gives you the sound you want and the best neck for much less. In my view anyway.
Just ordered an Aguilar AG4M pickup for my Sterling SUB Ray4. It’s a nice bass for the price, it sounds alright at the moment, but the pickup is a bit too hot, and it’s a ceramic/series configuration. I want the classic Stingray configuration: alnico/parallel. That’s what the Aguilar is, and I based my choice on different YouTube videos.

I picked up a Sterling Ray34CA a few weeks back and love it. I know that it's wired in series and not parallel like an actual Stingray, but my old ears didn't hear a massive difference in the comparison videos on Youtube. So while part of me wants to call it good...
I'm thinking about getting a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and a Mojotone 2 band preamp to get the "authentic" classic sound. I don't have any airs that it's going to make a night and day difference, but we are all about the chase, right?

IIRC, the Ray34 and Ray34CA are parallel like the StingRay. It is the SUB Ray4 which is wired in series.
