I've read once or thrice that a Stingray sounds best when the volume is running somewhere around 80% to 90% and that things get a bit wonky when it's cranked up to full. Has anyone else heard this?

One advantage of an active preamp is that the tone of the instrument remains consistent regardless of where the volume is set, which is different from most passive instruments. At least in my experiences, you can run a StingRays volume at any level and it won’t negatively impact the sound.
The only reason to do that is if you have a 2 band EQ, you can run the bass & treble at 100% with the volume down at 80%, or run the bass & treble at lower values with the volume at 100% to effectively boost the mids, and have consistent volume between the settings - the volume control kind of becomes the mid control in that setting.
Haven't heard this. It seems to be some sort of volume compensation for those that tend to use boosted settings of the active EQ. This can happen easily on the 2EQ versions as I commonly see players just crank up both controls. This is pretty large bass boost and decent treble boost, too. Enough to possibly distort the input of an amp.
There are no center detents on the knobs to mark a flat/neutral settings of the 2EQ controls. Honestly, there really isn't a 'flat' sound on the 2EQ, closest you can get is with the bass set somewhere around 0-1 and the treble around 4-5, but it still has some curves and contour to the sound.
