I almost got one of these. My salesman had it set aside for me. In the end I thought the price was a little on the outrageous side. I love tort so much I almost pulled the trigger.

I think I got mine from Guitar Center and the rep let me use a 15% off coupon on it. A regular shortscale Ray was out of stock everywhere and they cost like $2500 so it was kind of a no brainer to pick this one up.

Also, there were a lot times where the whole band had a Gov't Mule vibe going.

I kinda missed out on Gov't Mule in their heyday; then a Band I was rehearsing with Drummer picked 'Bad little Doggie' to play; quickly became favorite song on set list to play; went and did some listening and now a Big Fan

Their rhythm section is 'Powerful' only way I can describe it

I was wondering who picked this up - it definitely piqued my interest when I saw it on reverb/instagram. If you can, post some clips of it - I bet it growls like nothing else.

My friend gave me this bass, but I can not figure out which model it is exactly. I tried using the serial number, but it won't work for made in Malaysia instruments. He had it for over a decade I think.

It's a fake. I think someone just put a fake (and bad fake) decal on the headstock of a Malaysian made stingray copy

Ah that is shame, on the bright side, he found it when someone left it at a hostel so he didn't pay for it

The really bad decal on the headstock gives it away. Only American made MusicMan basses had that text and were clearly identified as made in America on the rear of the headstock. All the legit. offshore ones, were also clearly identified, as this one is not. It would be easy to bring it to a music store and compare it to an authentic one. Even OLP hasses do a better job of copying the original than this one.

Well if it plays and sounds good then just rock it.

Or if it plays good and doesn't sound good, then you could use it as platform for mods.

But if it doesn't play or sound good it might not be worth much of anything

Absolutely love this.

Currently speaking with them on a couple projects. One will be a neck for a Warmoth P bass w/ sweet spot with a Nordy 4.2 and John East MMSR preamp.

The other is a neck for my G&l JB-2 that went through a fire. Has some mojo as the neck was toast and body scorched in a couple spots. Some of the finish is rippled. Looks cool. Currently has an L-2000 Tribute (maple/maple) neck that moves a bit too much for my liking. Figure since EGC will make one for it why not. I'll probably contact G&L and see if I can get a set of MFD Jazz pickups that that they don't have listed.

That's a beautiful stingray and is basically what I'm going for with my Warmoth / EGC project. I bet it rips.

Thanks! And those pickup combos you're going with are gonna sound SO GOOD! Keep me posted on if G&L makes you that MFD Jazz set- I sent them an email about one a couple of years ago and never heard back. I'd snag a set for my Jazz in a heartbeat

Thank you. I'll keep you posted and make a thread when it all comes together. Won't clutter up here since it's not a Stingray aside from electronics and pu placement. As soon as I know on the MFD jazz pickups. Probably send you a message to discuss this project actually.

I saw this StingRay yesterday. Which model is it and what do the controls do? There are four knobs, a humbucker and a toggle switch. MM website shows something like it, the DarkRay, but with one more knob.

Looks like typical 5 string Stingray; knobs from top Volume, treble, midrange, Bass

Some 5-string models had a 3-coil pickup which allows series humbucker, parallel humbucker and single-coil with phantom - sounds like a SC but with humbucking from the phantom coil. Later models do not have the 3-coil pickup, in which case the middle position is series with a filter, as shown in the drawing above. The preamp has built-in compensation for the level differences between the pickup selections.

DarkRay is a newer model, derived from the Special, which has a built-in Darkglass preamp making it a totally different animal. There are also older (and sadly discontinued) models with piezo transducers in the bridge, which also have an extra knob.
