Here's my '94 fretless SR5. Was nearly mint when I bought it in 2012. I LOVE this bass - my go-to fretless. The neck feels INCREDIBLE. Very smooth, with some subtle, but very classy flame and birdseye figure.

That is actually Pau Ferro. More dense than Rosewood (closer to Ebony), with more reddish streaks. I've got a few basses with Pau Ferro and really like how it feels and looks. And they sound great, so...

I'm ok without a number. Don't really do club numbers. Not that I'm complaining, I just don't use them for anything.

My '97 Honeyburst - bought as a regular gig replacement for my '78. The S FLA salt air was taking a toll on the metal bits:

Best of all - my 1978 'B00****' bass. Bought it in '84 from a Mom&Pop shop outside of Omaha (Bellevue?) while on the road - traded a Kramer DMZ1000 and $200 for it. My only bass for 20+ years:

As to the question about the wood pickguard - it was on there when I got it, the only non original piece. Even the mutes are original (and hard as diamonds, at this point).

You are right, I had forgotten that detail. In fact, looking up the serial number revealed that fact. Brain fart. The pic certainly doesn't help. As for looking dark, one of the guitarists at church this morning thought I had bought another MM that was black.

Wow, Jerry, that's gorgeous!

My serial number is E00040. The back of the neck on mine looks like yours, but I have the rosewood fingerboard, as you can tell. And the grain on the front of mine isn't as apparent as yours. I could get jealous, but I love the way mine plays and sounds, so I'm quite happy.
