One of the great treats of Nashville is to see a band made up of "A list" guys doing a little side project. This is singer-songwriter-guitarist Pat McLaughlin backed up by a bunch of studio aces, including my man Michael Rhodes on bass. This is a video I took at 3rd and Lindsley a year ago.

Printers Alley?

The wife and I finally made it to Nashville for a quickie mid-week vacation last year. After spending two days doing the tourist thing (Opry, Museum, Honky Tonks) we went to Printer's Alley on our last night. Stopped in Bourbon Street just to check it out and stayed the whole night. We were blown away by the band, their stage presence and their musicianship. And to top it off, they simply passed the tip bucket as break to get paid like anyone else on the strip.

After I got home, I looked up the band. Derek St Holmes = the voice and rhythm guitar for Ted Nugent throughout the golden years. Sandy Gennaro = drummer for Cyndi Lauper and Joan Jett. No BLEEPING wonder they rocked. And to think we sat 6 feet away, paid no cover charge, and only threw a $20 bill in their bucket. Probably the best night I've ever had in a bar.

That Rick Beato vid about VI IV I V progressions is funny, but face it, there are a bunch of progressions that have been used endlessly over the years

I IV (c'mon, where would indie rock be without this one)

i bVII bVI v (descending natural minor sequence)

Our brains are attuned to the tensions and resolutions of simple progressions like those. Nothing wrong with using them if the song works. In diatonic music there's only eight chords anyway.

Better discussion would be what the heck augmented chords are good for

Did a 34 in Nashville TN , on the weekends that place has a ton of bands playing at pretty much every store ( bar ) front and pretty much wherever , lots of music happen ...
And it's all covers they are a-playing or so it seemed?

Not sure what you mean by "34". Per the Urban Dictionary, "34" means ... never mind.

These "music strips" (Bourbon, Beale, Broadway) are tourist driven. Just something to think about.

I'm sure Nashville has great local music, but the strip is not where you'll find it.

I found Austin to be refreshingly different. Last time I was there, a walk down Rainey Street revealed great band after great band, with almost 100% original music.

No way. What’s the name of this place so I make sure no one I know ever goes in there? I’d catch a case, that must mean I don’t make enough money lol. Getting robbed of $40 I’d have no choice but to wait for the police. If they kicked me out, wanted money they didn’t earn, and wouldn’t let me leave, I’d be suing everyone afterwards for holding me against my will too. Let the guy take a picture that just proves you were in the place, not that you owe them anything. Cops ask why you bailed he kicked you out.

Hey Honkey tonk, you should be at least thankful that the bars there are hiring live bands.
Most of the bars where I am at are going to Karaoke because it's cheaper for them.
There's only a handful of places to play and it is dwindling by the day.

WENT TO NASHVILLE IN 1990 AND SAW AN AMAZING CHICK AND HER EQUALLY AMAZING BAND DO AN AMAZING SHOW OF ORIGINAL STUFF AT SOME BAR. GREAT SHOW. IN TERMS OF COVER TUNE BITCHING, HERE IS WHERE I STAND. THE GUILD SYSTEM, AS I CALL IT, OF POPULAR MUSIC HAS BEEN BROKEN BY THE STUDIO SYSTEM. IT USED TO BE ANY IDIOT COULD GET A GIG AT THE CORNER BAR ON THE WEEKEND. I KNOW I WAS ONE OF THEM. THEN YOU ROSE THRU THE SYSTEM TO A FULL TIME LOCAL AND THEN REGIONAL BAND. THINK JACO AND THE CC RIDERS. IF YOU REACHED THAT LEVEL YOU WOULD GET RECORDING DATES AND THEN DO ORIGINALS AND GET SIGNED WITH A PAYING RECORD CONTRACT. THIS IS THE KEY HERE- DOING ALL THOSE COVERS IN FRONT OF A BUNCH OF DRUNKS WAS THE BEST TRAINING YOU COULD GET. YOU LEARNED WHAT ACTUALLY GETS A RESPONSE FROM PEOPLE WHO DON'T EVEN CARE YOU ARE THERE, BOTH IN TERMS OF COMPOSITION AND YOUR PERFORMANCE. THATS HOW GREAT MUSIC GETS MADE AND THATS HOW CATS LEARN TO BOTH REALLY PLAY AND WRITE GREAT MUSIC. Sandy Gennaro also played with Pat Travers (RadioActive album)...Pat called him "The Italian Battalion". I'm going to Nashville for first time on 1-25 for a coupla days, looking forward to it.

In my drinking days I've been kicked out of few bars , and somehow being at bar on Broadway totally sober and minding my own business and had just ordered a 40 dollar lunch , got kicked out of a bar for parking my bicycle on the sidewalk. Yeah so I guess in those parts the being sober thing is not beneficial to avoiding being harrassed by security. The security guard was going to let me stay after I told him I had ordered lunch .
But yeah no dice , not doing business with a place after being told to leave .
crazy part , side walks are littered with scooters .
I paid my tab asked to donate my meal to the homeless .
bitter and sober I saw through the hype...
That said it is a fun town but what I saw was a town full of talent playing the same stuff . Over and over ...

Man, there's a couple of songs you can write with just the material in this post!

I'm certain many of these bands are good but its someone else's ( art ) music

I'm certain most of the music performed by most of the top acts is written by someone other than the people performing it.

Plus, if it wasn't for all of these bands in Nashville performing other people's music, the songwriters would have to do it

Actually "covers" is another word for the absolute cream of the crop best 0.0000000001% of original music written in the last 60+ years.
You would do well to consider where on that spectrum your originals sit before inflicting them on the public.

Considering I have multiple composing and recording credits (bass and guitar) for songs which have been featured on several hit television shows on The History Channel, CNBC, Animal Planet, Discovery Network, Investigation Discovery, A& E, PBS and other networks, my originals are doing just fine, but thanks for the advice.

This is truth. There are venues in Nashville where the "pickers" hang out. That is were you find the songwriters hawking their wares. I don't know if it is still there, but one of my favorites was The Old Time Pickin' Parlor.

Ahhhh, background music. Where those that couldn't write a hit if their life depended on it go.
