Music Stores in San Francisco

Hi there,

i got lucky and need to go to Frisco for a short Trip in May.
The Idea is to get a new Bass while i am over there, so maybe you have a good idea where to go.

I am basically looking for either a Music Man or a Fender Preci Bass.

Any sugesstions are welcome :-)

Cheers,
Marc

Not sure bout Frisco, but up north a little bit in San Rafael theres a store called Bananas at Large. Haven't been for awhile but they had alot of really nice basses.

I'll second Bananas At Large. They always have a large selection of Fenders, not sure about Music Man though.

I used to avoid the SF Guitar Center, but I've heard that it's gotten better.

The Haight Ashbury Music Center is pretty cool, at least the last time I was there. Decent selection.

GC SF is, well, GC. If they have what you want on the wall and it's not too beat-up you're in luck. Prices are good for retail. Staff are generally friendly.

The Haight Ashbury store is somewhat cooler (in that "we're trading on something that happened forty-odd years ago" way that everything on Haight Street is cool) but more pricey.

The better stores are out of the city - rent/tax is too high to manage a good selection and good prices. (Not tried Bananas at Large myself, will check it out sometime - thanks!)

If you already know what you want, there's always the option of ordering it online and having it delivered to GC for you to pick up when you get there.

Take a trip about 15 miles south to Redwood City and Gelb Music.
Best selection of high end basses (MTD, Roscoe, Zon) and high end amps I've seen other than "Bass-Boutique" shops. As well as Fender and MM.
Worth the trip if you have a car.

If you have transportation and can get out a little further, the GC in San Jose has one of the best EBMM bass selections in the area. Also, Guitar Showcase in San Jose (very near the SJ GC) is one of the best independents in the greater Bay Area.

And, no, never call it Frisco ;)
