I used to really dig live groove based music...be it prog, rock, reggae, or funk.

I've seen nero many tens of times and was glad to see them for a reunion weekend this past.

Not recent, but my most jaw-dropping musical moment was seeing the Dixie Dregs when they were first starting, in the spring of '77. It was in a small college auditorium. I was sitting on about the third row. I was big into Southern Rock and Stones-type stuff, and I'd never heard anything like the Dregs.

Begin by The Millennium. The most expensive album to record at the time, and it's sadly unknown now. The musicianship is great, but even better is how modern the recording sounds. It was recorded in 1968, but it sounds like it could have been done in 2006- the drums, especially the bass drums are heavy and in your face (at least at points).

Also, Merriwether Post Pavilion by Animal Collective. People say music's not as good as it used to be, but this whole album (especially My Girls) is just incredible.

Right now I'm obsessed with The Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium. Beautiful, creepy, violent, cathartic, uplifting, oppressive all at once. And I don't know that Flea has ever played more brilliantly than on that record. But good Christ, is Cedric Bixler-Zavala's voice a revelation throughout.
