Music that you prefer playing than listening to

One of the many great things about being a musician is that you get a richer relationship to music. There are genres and styles of music that I like to play, but not listening to as much. I think rock and roll and rockabilly is very fun to play but pretty boring listening to. What kind of music do you prefer playing than listening to?

Blues. Great vibe playing it on stage, but repetitive….?? OMG. Every song starts sounding the same.

Jazz. Awesome to play walking bass lines and do your own thing, but even I drift off when listening to a 14 minute song with endless/aimless soloists ‘self-gratifying’ on stage.

I've grown appreciative of some genres that I don't care to listen to but have had to play. For example, I'm not a fan of heavy metal, and even almost passed on an audition because I felt like a poser trying to play it. I wound up getting the spot and had a good time playing stuff I don't care to listen to and gained some appreciation for a couple of bands that I always considered overrated because the bass lines are fun.

Interesting answers. Hard rock and metal is my favorite styles of music, I like blues and jazz a lot but I can understand why some people prefer playing those genres than listening to them. In a way, I think music in general is the most fun playing but I enjoy listening to music endlessly. As a bass nerd, I can appreciate music that I am not the biggest fan of or doesn't care that much about. I am not the biggest fan of Guns N Roses, Nirvana and Green Day but I like the bass playing of Duff McKagan, Krist Novoselic and Mike Dirnt. I don't listen that much to pop music but I think it's fun playing. I am a fan of 60's and 70's pop and I try to inject my influences from Paul McCartney, Carol Kaye and Joe Osborn into the pop music that I play

For genres, musical theater. I'm not crazy about musicals, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the few I've played over the decades.

For artists, I don't like Billy Joel but loved playing some of his tracks in a cover band. I'm also not much into the Grateful Dead, but I've always liked playing their tracks as well, to such an extent that I'd probably enjoy playing in a GD tribute band--provided I could stand listening to them enough to learn the material!
