Musician's Insurance in Canada?

Hey,
I'm trying to find a place to buy Musician's Insurance in Canada and haven't been having luck. Does anybody in this huge resource bas(s)e we call talkbass have any information for me?

Thanks,
Evan Locke

Evan - I'm assuming that since there is universal healthcare in Canada that you're looking for gear insurance and not insurance for a musician (person)

So, assuming that - any company that insures your car or home will insure your gear. When you're adding the gear to your insurance you should have info for them such as the original price paid, specs and pictures. They will ask you if your gear ever leaves your house and if you make money using it. If your gear leaves your house you'll pay more. If you make money from it you'll pay even more and it may also result in you having to pay taxes on the money you earn performing.

Basically when you insure your gear and tell them it doesn't leave you're house they're adding a rider onto your homeowners insurance.

If tell them it doesn't leave the house and it gets damaged outside the house then they won't cover it. They Might cover it if the gear is in your car. I'm not totally sure.

When I lived in Ottawa I insured my gear through State Farm along with my apartment insurance and car insurance. Check em out. It was cheap.

Hey guys,

I'm an insurance broker when I'm not on TB (hehe) and what panama said was pretty spot on. I'm not sure about the whole tax thing, but that's something Revenue Canada would deal with rather than insurance.

I made a few phone calls to the insurance companies I deal with and none seem to take professional use music equipment. This doesn't mean other personal (home & auto) insurance companies won't take it but it's looking as though you'll have to look for a commercial property policy (such as a business would). This won't be that much more expensive and the coverages will be much broader - including optional lost wages amongst others.

If you're looking for a rough idea, I spoke to someone in our comemrcial deptartment and they need to know the following.

Limit (total amount of insurance needed in $)

Description of use (ex: 3 nights/week bar gigs, corporate functions 2 per month)

Location primarly kept & description (ex: jam spot in house basement)

Where is the equipment taken (Ontraio, Canada, North America or World-Wide)

If you email that to [email protected] I can forward it to my contact and she can give you a rough idea of what you'd be looking at.

I tried writing this in a way to not sound like a sleazy insruance guy trying to sell you insurance, hope it came through that way.

Anyway if you had any questions, shoot me an email and I can give you my work number.

Hope this helps!

Also, if you knew a good teacher in the Ottawa area, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks!!

Someone just got back to me and apprently you'd be looking at around $500 for annual coverage. This was just me asking "what do you think coverage would be for say $5000 of equpiment used professionally a few nights weekly?" so it's just a ball-park figure.

Hope it helps!

I believe that might be a bit on the high side. Let me contact my friend in Canada that works as a pro musician and professor and find out. I know he has way more than $5k worth of equipment and I don't think he pays nearly that much. I know he uses this company http://www.musicins.com/ and he lives in both US and Canada (and they know it). His agent is Robin Hauth.

Update: He told me he has $20k in coverage for $260 per year.
