Musicians that don't look like musicians

Sometimes when you watch a band you can't help thinking that the guitarist/bassist/drummer/whatever isn't really a guitarist/bassist/drummer/whatever. I for one really don't think, when i see his picture, that Chad Smith (drummer RHCP) isn't really a drummer. I mean, he doesn't LOOK like a drummer.

Any other musicians you got this feeling with?

I've always thought that Bobby Kimball's appearance is totally incongruent with his voice. He has always looked like a truck driver to me.

Paul Simon (EDIT: Looks more like an extreme left politician)

At least David Hungate (4th from the left) and Bobby Kimball (far right) on this photo of the first Toto lineup don't really look like musicians (or even men - look at Steve Porcaro on the far left... :ninja:) . God I hate this photo, btw....

EDIT: Saw Alvaro already added Mr. Kimball. Then he is in the lead currently. :)

Deacon, depending on my next paycheck, I might be seeing Keith Jarrett Trio when they play here in Chicago. I'm hoping for a staff discount on the ticket.

Wow, hope you'll manage to get the tickets. :)

I love their music. I'm not quite sure I would like to see that guy having sex with his piano though... :hiding:

:D

what the hell is a musician supposed to look like? this is dumb.

Why so serious?

These guys look like real musicians:

They're in a quite popular cover band band called Trr Trr Trr, successfully riding on an 80s theme for six years and touring frequently. Three of them are old friends of mine (although not very close).

Well Chad looks like Will Ferrell, but that's a discussion for another time.

I disagree... There are definitely some people who look like musicians, and other people who don't.

Here's the guitarist of my band, who definitely looks like a musician, if you ask me:

I've been told I don't look like a musician. I think it's partly because I'm balding & have pretty short hair, I'm short & pretty overweight, and also because of the way I dress (I always wear loafers, wool slacks, and either a pique shirt or an oxford shirt, sometimes with a jacket, and always with an undershirt... I rarely wear T-shirts out in public, and I don't think I even own any blue jeans).

Little ol' me...

Huey Lewis - he looks like someone's dad or something.

Yeah! I always thought he looked like some kind of salesman.

Dave, you look sort of like the singer from the Smithereens. You're younger and better looking, but still look like at least one musician.

I agree. Even without a bass in the pics, you look like a musician to me. I think it's the beard.

David Gilmour looks like an old politician or something.

Hmm. Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson look somehow non-musician-ish to me. Geddy squeaks through with the hair, but the glasses and build seem more like a doctor, maybe.

What about Tony Levin? He could pass for a lawyer, perhaps. . .

Truly, this thread is a timewaster from a bass point of view, but it's kind of interesting, philosophically. What makes a musician look like a musician? What is the sound of one musician clapping? If a musician takes a dump in the woods, and there's no one around to smell it, does it have an odour?

I'd have to say:
1. Hair and dress, it seems. Both impermanent.
2. Same as any other person.
3. No.
