This is a guess, but probably around 95-96 because the earliest Sterlings have the mute bridge and they were introduced in 93. If you can trace the earliest Sterling without the mute bridge, then that is most likely the year.
'96 was the first year of the non-mute (downsized) bridgeon the Stingray.

Also notice, around 1/4 of the page down from top, they show a Sabre bridge. Interesting how closely it resembles a G&L bridge...

'94-'95 was still the old bridge plate and dummy screws in place, but the mutes were not included and being sold as a separate accessory pack.

I've had a 94 that didn't come with mutes, just dummy screws, so apparently this is a transition year.
No the old bridge won't just drop right in. The mutes require a channel be routed so the threads of the screws go below the surface of the body. Also of it's a string through bridge, then you'd have to drill and install ferrules. But as far as topload bridges, I'm not sure the 3 mounting screws are in the same locations (I don't think they are).
Also the new bridges are mounted offset on the body so the strings are a straight pull. The old bridges were center mounted, that's why the strings always angled funny between the saddles and bridge plate.
