It's available in the Classic series colors one of which is Retroburst which I believe was a color that Sterling came up with and had a Sabre in that color. I think his Sabre had the larger Stingray pup in the bridge position. IIRC

Sterlings personal bass that Leo built him is a StingRay, not a Sabre. The pickup has 10 poles instead of 8.

Plus AFAIK it's the only EBMM with two pickups and the classic 2 band EQ together.

Can anyone tell me if the pickups are in the same position as those on a HH Stingray?

The non-exposed Sabre pickups have been in place since 1981, until it was discontinued in 1991. The reason mentioned above by Brad.

Only the '78-'80 Sabres had exposed ones.

I'm quite excited about these - apparently the selector switch is more intuitive in the selections than the original one - and it's got true single coil ability with noiseless circuit. A Sabre in retroburst or natural sounds like a GAS worthy acquisition to me.

I spent a few days lusting after a sonic P and a lake placid Jazz in the new AV series - then realised I'm a 70s/80s player not a 60s one - so the Sabre shouts louder (nice as the Fenders are) - maybe an AV after the Sabre

Does anyone know exactly what the selector switch did(besides just pup selection) on the ones in the 80s?

I'd love to express more interest , but right now that e-flyer thing is all we've got. maybe when some actual production basses show up in pictures we can become more vigorous in our discussion. also your thread post doesn't have enough capital letters and exclamation marks. so only the subtlest of sabre fans (like us) have come in to discuss its virtues.

I always wondered if the P bass got it so right when it comes to pick up position, why did Leo move them for the Ray and Sabre?

It's been said Leo was slowly losing his hearing, so what sounded good to him in the Fender days wouldn't have been the same in the MusicMan days.

I think the Sabre is a great bass. I'm happy to see the reissue.
