Musicman serial number.

The serials for early mm stingrays are all over the place... I've tried to date mine and went to the mm 'guru' site..

"Unfortunately, and as incredible as it may seem, records for Pre-EB instruments were never made. My website is to give a general idea of age of an instrument. To accurately date your Bass, the neck would have to be removed to observe the date stamps on both the neck heel and in the body pocket. This can be done by a luthier for a small fee. Other than that, the only advice I can give is to do a comparison with other serial numbers on my website list. But, as you can see, by comparing your serial with others on the list your Bass can have been made in either 1977 or 1978. In addition to not keeping a data base, Music Man made no attempt to keep serial numbers in strict chronological order. As neck plates (with engraved serial numbers) became low on the process line, the containers were merely topped up. As a result, earlier Basses could end up with a serial indicating a latter year."

I'm sick of dismantling my basses for the sake of date accuracy. The serial on mine is on the neck plate (three hole, tilt).

Post a piccy of your bass please.

You need to post in a certain thread on the EBMM forum and you can get exact date or clarify any details on your bass like color/fretboard etc. They will get back to you within a day or two.

I'm looking to purchase this Pre-Ernie Ball Musicman Bass, but there are a few oddities with it, and I wanted to bounce these pics off somebody with more knowledge of these than I. The finish on the neck and body are slightly different. There is no Logo on the front or back of the headstock. Serial # B022468 is on the Bridge. 2695 is stamped on the back of the Headstock.

The lack of headstock decal is the only odd thing about that bass. The neck and body finishes being different is common. The stamped serial number and old school tuners seem quite legit.

Also it seems like that bass is under a grand. I would buy that if I were you and I'd buy an old Boss OC2 pedal. Get your 80's Pino Palladino grooves sharpened up!

Well, lets start with the preEB details:
The body looks in great shape and all there.
preEB headstocks did not have any script or numbers on the back, those four digits arent factory.

The fingerboard caps on preEB necks were thin round laminate, this bass looks to have had a thick slab ebony board added on, which would explain why the truss nut opening plastic liner is gone and so is the headstock decal, and you said the finish doesnt match.

I had a B0226xx before, so seems to be 81/82.
