MusicMan Stealth Neck Finish?

STRONGLY leaning toward an EBMM Stingray 5 in Stealth Black finish, However, I've noticed that the back of the neck is black too (as you would expect) so what finish is applied to it? I already own a 4 string Stingray and the oil finished neck is bliss, would the stealth neck have a satin finish or something?

I would just go and try one, but none of the music stores around where I live stock a stealth black MusicMan.

it's a satin finish. IIRC, the old EBMM SUB basses had necks finished the same way.

I thought it would have been, couldn't see a way of painting it then oil finishing it myself. I've been reading that the Bongo seems to suffer from the satin finish rubbing off and turning glossy. Would the stealth neck suffer from the same issue?

I would expect it to get glossy with playing, I have a Matt black Warwick thumb that has gotten glossy in all the places guitars usually wear...

Funny I don't ever remember the Stealth SR's having black necks. I know the Bongo did, but for some reason I thought the SR's were standard unfinished necks.

what he said. any satin neck will eventually turn glossy from playing time. basically your hand is buffing the finish over time. when it becomes too tacky for you, just take a bit of steel wool to it and knock it back down to a satin.

it is some kind if satin, but I think it's different from the sub. I've had 3 or 4 subs and every one had a neck that felt kinda sticky. the stealth I had felt very slick and fast.

If it helps at all, I've been playing basses with gloss finishes - including the back of the neck - for many, many years. Never once had any problem getting around on one. Never felt one get sticky or tacky to any significant degree.

Perhaps the problem arises when one palms the neck, instead of playing it with only the pad of the thumb centered on the back, as is recommended. Playing with a light grip / light touch, as well as with minimal physical contact on the back of the neck undoubtedly contributes to optimum playability - even with a gloss neck.

I don't palm the neck. I only press my thumb against the back of the neck. Nevertheless, on glossy necks, I always end up experiencing moments of the neck feeling sticky or tacky. I think it's mostly to do with moisture. If I get a little sweat on my hand or it's really humid or something like that, then is when I will start to notice that occasional "stick".

It is for that reason that I am strongly averse to glossy finished necks.
