im thinking of buying an musicman bass, however the pickup's output is weak (i have to increase the amps volume to hear it), also the tone knobs doesn't seem to be responding, what can be the possible issue with the electronics ?

could it just be a problem with the battery?

Sounds like it needs a new battery.

The battery is always the fiirst place to look for active electronics problems. And that does indeed sound like a StingRay without a battery, or a mostly dead battery. Here's a good tip. Don't bother measuring the voltage, just buy a new Duracell Alkaline and pop it in there. Should last for a year.

just found out that this is not a battery issue... i checked the preamp part and one capacitor seems to have some burn marks.

Any ideas on how can i isolate the issue further?
