Musicman Stingray HS vs regular

Hi, I was at guitar center the other day, shopping ofr a bass when I happened to fall upon a musicman stingray. First off let me just say that those basses have probably some of the greatest tone I have ever heard for the price. So I started playing on a regular single humbucker stingray with 3 band eq and quickly realized that although great for slapping, I found it hard to play fingerstyle. So I move onto the hh which also sounds great but the second humbucker tends to get in the way while double thumping. That's is when I finally saw the hs, the single coil in the front gave me exactly the right amount of space for double thumping and it felt great for fingerstyle. The only problem is that this bass just didn't have that same pow/big sound all the other stingrays had, especially while slapping. I checked the battery, put all the settings the same on every bass, tried only using the back pickup but still it wasn't as powerful as the other ones. Now, is it possible that this was just a fluke and that this bass just happened to sound "pussier" than all the other ones, or does that extra single coil pickup have anything to do with it? Hopefully someone here will have answers for me.
p.s. I didn't get to try any other ones because it was the only one they were holding.
