Musicman stingray - pick up replacement

I have a Nordstrand MM5.2 with their matching preamp in my SR5 and it sounds LOTS "more original" than the regular MM 3 band pre and the ceramic PU

That's actually good to know. Since I absolutely love the way my ceramic pup and 3-band preamp sound in my 98 SR5, I guess I'll not be considering that combination for it. Actually, I can't imagine my SR5 sounding any better with any aftermarket replacements. I love it the way it is.

But not to fear, I'm spending plenty of money with Nordstrand on all of my Fenders...:D

Seymour Duncan basslines smb4.Just did a short review thread on it.Great pickup.Really warm tone,a little more growly.

There is a huge thread over in the Pickups & Electronics forum:

I wasn't a fan of the Nordstrand pickups at all. They were too polite sounding for my taste. I felt the stock pickup was a much better for what I do.
With that said, I strongly prefer the ceramic pickups tot he alnico ones. So much so that even my pre EB 78' Stingray is sporting a Seymour Duncan ceramic pickup.

Now that's a long long thread ;)

Those of you who chose nordstrand ... Did you get the preAmp as well? What are your thoughts on that ??

What about the famous MM stingray G string problem (that it's a little les output VOL Then the other strings) ?

I have two Stingrays with MM4.2s, they're both 3eqs converted to 2eqs and I put a rotary switch in to do series/parallel. hence the MM4.2s, I didn't have to modify the original pickups so I can put both basses back to stock if I feel like it at some point. I didn't have a problem with the stock pickups but the Nordstrands are great...

I have a Stingray with this pickup in. I tried to like the Seymour replacements but they didn't sound right to me.

I have it so that I can have either coil in noiseless single mode as well as the classic parallel wiring. I really like it and it doesn't sound much unlike the original pickup that it replaced, nor do I sense less top end -as the information about this pickup says I would due to its construction.

Peace,

Rob.

I just added the Aggie stingray pickup to my 90s ray and it really came to life. Much more quack and vocal quality without losing the big thump. I always thought the 90s one sounded a little bland and wanted to change the pre or pickup. I did the pickup first and that seemed to do the trick. I can run more treble on the pre without being annoying. it seems more pleasant in the upper register.
I dont think Ill change the pre now.
Never played anything else in a ray, other than old pre eb and newer ones.
