Those numbskulls are trapped in a world of materialistic egotism. True music is inside each musician and it isn't reflected by what instruments they happen to play. A real musician can make music with rocks and sticks. They just happen to sound better with nice equipment!

If someone called my practice rig cute I would definitely look them right in the eye and say, "Thanks! Beats lugging 100 lbs of cr@p around to rehearse so loudly that we all go deaf."

The thread is about stupidity, not whether big amps are cool. Of course they're cool. I want a 3x15 and 1000 watts. **** yeah. but ...Those guys WILL likely deafen themselves in a practice room with large rigs. They're morons.
I'm surprised about one thing that the OP posted. In the New York area, it's common practice for rehearsal studios to have house amps / backline so that the clientele can get in and out quickly, thereby aiding in turnover from one band to the next. Carting in amps to a rehearsal studio seems like a waste of time and effort, but that may just be the Sydney scene. Either way, because they can be peculiar, I've seen some guitar players who still insist on bringing their own amp head or combo into these facilities. But when we pay for the convenience of rehearsal spaces, that fee includes use of the house backline and PA by the whole band. Otherwise, it seems like you're just renting what may or may not be a soundproofed room.
As for these other bands who are giving you crap as they load out? Like others have said, if you rise to their remarks you play into their game. Focus on your music and your time with your band. If you let the remarks of this other band get to you, the only people that your anger will affect is you.
As for general elitism about gear? I think that sort of thing tends to be the domain of those whose primary focus may be on their equipment. And more often than not you see that with a good number of immature musicians. After a while you come to a realization that your musical equipment are simply tools.

At our rehearsal studio we pick on bands we don't like and make jokes at the expense of other people who are there, but obviously we do it behind closed doors. The only difference between a jerk and a regular person is that a jerk get's caught.
If you want to make out like you never made mirth of another band/musician behind their backs you can be my guest but I'm not going to pretend like I'm a white knight who never makes fun of people. It's one of my favourite things.

My favourite people to bag out are kids (like 15-19 year olds) who turn up with Mesa kit or an SVT that daddy bought. Of course I'm not stupid enough to say it to anyone's face. That would make me a jerk. The band in the OPs post should have waited til they were in the carpark before they started ribbing on. That's where they stuffed that one up.

There is just so much wrong with this gear elitism. I like a good sound as much or more than the next guy, but gear is only part of the equation.
First off to those people playing stacks of equipment in a 12'x12' room, you are going to be deaf, and no amount of equipment can compensate for that.
Second, you just have to learn to deal with snobs of any type. No matter what you do, someone is going to slam you. If you have awesome chops someone will say you have no soul. If you have a great feel someone will say you don't play technical enough. You can't win, so just work hard and do what you do.
Thirdly, If you can play, all you need is a Squier and any decent sounding amp. At a certain age, you start to realize less is more, especially if you have to carry it.
As an analogy for this: My former boss was an amateur racer. He was good enough to be an instructor at the local track. His favorite car was a 50k Corvette, pretty economical by racing standards. He could basically smoke anyone in Ferrari's, Porches, ... whatever, just because he knew how to drive.

Meh. Give it back to them. Next time it happens, just laugh and point at them while whispering useless dribble to each other. They won't have any idea what you are saying. But they will be offended none the less.
You come here to practice, not to show off all the money you spent of high-end gear. That's for live shows
That assumes these clowns can get live shows. No, I strongly suspect that showing off gear is a big part of why they're there.
Anyone who has ever spent some time with an instrument knows that size doesn't count.
