Hello. I have been playing bass most all of my life.....but am gonna try the advice thing this time around. What are the "must have" effects for bass guitar?

I want to have a very "universal" setup for all styles of music......but mainly rock. What are some good ( noiseless ) OD Effects and Wah?
Tech 21 sansamp BDDI with the presets (3 footswitch version) sounds right for you.
Not sure on wah, never use one. But i know Dunlop do a version made for bass.

Source Audio BEF Pro+MWBD Pro=Overdrive, fuzz, distortion, wah, envelope filter, static low pass filter, boost, graphic eq, etc... can do lots with just those two on your board and they work well for most styles of music depending on settings and such.
I never really used effects over the past 36 years of playing bass. In fact, the only effect I really remember using was back in the late 70s/early 80s: the MXR Phase 90 phase shifter and I only really used it for one song. That being said, I bought a Boss GT-10B a month or so ago and have found it very versatile and useful now that I play in a band with no rhythm guitar or keyboard. You might want to check into it if you are looking for something that can adapt to pretty much anything you need outside of a bass/guitar synth like the Roland GR-55.

You're not giving very much information here, but...
I'd say an overdrive and a compressor are pretty standard. If you're feeling funky you could try an envelope filter. God help you if you start feeling synthy.

If you took all the pedalboards on TB and boiled them all down, you'd probably end up with something like this:
Korg Pitchblack (tuner)-->Boss Bass Chorus (chorus)-->boutique fuzz X (bear, but with hair)-->Tech 21 VT Bass (tubey tone shaper)-->EHX Q-tron of some sort (envelope filter)-->MXR Bass Comp/DOD Milk Box (compressor).

Yeah, or the Darkglass stuff. We don't know if they are just a fad, or have staying power yet though.

It's a noob's "decision" to know what the hottest trends are in bass effect pedals? I think it's exactly the sort of thing a noob would want someone else to tell him.
Not what I'm saying. Effects are somewhat of a personal thing, what works for one person may not work for another. OP being a member since '08 should have some idea of what's going on. If not then they should try a thread search or google/youtube because simply asking questions such as, "what is the best..." don't really help, you're going to get a multitude of different answers. I say a Line 6 M9 and a decent dirt pedal would probably be sufficient in this case.
