I have played them both. The build quality, feel, and look of the new Pawn Shop are great. But I personally don't like the pickup. If you want any high end and definition in your tone, this is not the pickup for you. The older model with the P pickup has a much different sound, which I prefer.I am considering these two basses for a new bass actually and this thread seemed pretty useful! But I've got one or two questions left... So the old one is brighter? The newer one chunkier... But can I get bright at all with the new one? I'm always a bit doubtfull about that because I owned an Epiphone EB-0 and dang that thing was muddy! I hated the fact that there was almost no brightness to it except when I had just installed new roundwound strings so I ended up selling. Considering the huge similarity between the pickups of both basses that makes me doubt... Anyone whos played them both can compare their tone and tell me? Any help would be great!
I've also considered the reverse jag bass and I see some of you have tried it... Any help please?

Mustang: Old vs New Pawn Shop

Is that not-so-great pickup on the Pawnshop the same as on the Modern Player Telecaster bass?

Dont you guys have mid & treble knobs on your amps? I have a Squier Tele Bass Special with a WRHB and I have no problem getting a trebly sound if I want it. The old Mustang pickup is not a P Bass pup (I wish). I had a Mustang and much prefer the WRHB.
??? "P pickup"? Which one is that?
I've never taken short-scales seriously, but I out of curiosity I took out a Longhorn I bought new to flip and never got around to it and gave it a try. It was crap, but I realized that the short-scale was of huge benefit to my ruined fretting hand. Much less pain!
Since then, I've been considering a shortscale if I can whip it into a viable bass. The Mustangs are interesting, but each one has things I don't like. I like the Dyna-Gakki MIJ, but the pickups are supposed to be anemic (they certainly look like they would be). The Pawnshop sunburst would be OK, except that the specs are better on the Dyna and I can live without that atrocious MOTO pickguard and muddy pickup.
I may just look for a deal on the Dyna, put on the highest-tension flats I can find and try to make the best of it.
Maybe I was mistaken about the old Mustang pickup. It may not be a P pickup but it sounds a lot more like one than the Pawn Shop humbucker. I have had the same issue with all the newer Fenders and Squiers with those chrome-style pickups. They all sound muddy to me, with not enough high end definition. The new Fender Telecaster (made in China), the Squier Mustangs, and the VM Telecaster Special are all examples.
You guys must be getting your U's and I's mixed up. The Pawn Shop Stang is plenty middy but certainly not muddy. Unless you roll off the tone knob of course.
Yup thats the one. Just gotta sell my 4 pro hopefully the craigslist buyer I'm talking to doesn't flake like most of the others.
Good luck it's a killer bass. They really could have skipped the sunburst and did a black and maple. I might have bought 2!
