Yep. Its the same pickup thats in the 50s P bass they are selling now but the Mustang has more bottom end than the P bass. Im guessing its the shorter scale length as well as the body. The slab body resonates better than one with the contours in it Id imagine.

Mustang PJ flat recommendations?

Good to know. I thought it was just a Mexican standard P pickup?
They seem to use like 10-20 year old American designs for the Mexican models often. So it's like buying a MIA set of pickups from a decade or so ago.
They get Fender America hand-me-downs at the Ensenada plant. Machines and all.
Oh and I agree about the tone. I think the short scale is also why the bridge pickup sounds so good. I raised it up a bit and it balances well now even.

Tapewounds are generally brighter and more articulate than flats because they're actually not flatwound but roundwound in disguise.
I always thought tape wounds were boomier than flats
Not necessarily... There are a wide range of tonal characteristics associated with tapewounds.
Take La Bella, for example... White, Gold, Bronze, Copper, Black - they all have different tonal flavors from dark to bright.

Interesting. I had no idea. My perception was (in general) :
Rounds > Flats > Tapes
For brightness, of course with some differences depending on material. Some flats are as bright as warm rounds.
The pickup in the MIM Standard uses a Modern split coil. The Mustang has the Vintage split coil found in the 50s P bass which is also MIM I believe.
Interesting, it is listed differently on the site. The MIM standard P has it listed as "Standard Split Coil Pickup", no "Vintage" tag there.
Well that's cool.
I'd expect the modern variety to be a bit hotter and slightly warmer actually. Im not sure I'd want that on this bass. It's pretty warm already as everyone noted already.

Measure from the ball anchor to the tuner side of the nut, then go consult Jason's tech articles and references on bassstringsonline.com to see which sets fit this new bridge configuration.
Uh, no. Mustangs are short scale 30", so the new ones with the new top load plate bridge may need conventional short scale strings. Consult Jason's technical charts and articles on bassstringsonline.com .
Just to refresh this thread, I placed an order for the D'Addario ETB92S nylons for my Mustang PJ, should be here in time for the informal retirement party gig I'm playing. I'll report back with my thoughts/findings.
Just wondered what the OP wound up getting for this bass, and how it sounded. I scored one of these cheap & am not thrilled with the strings on it. Too bright for me. I have Chromes on order.
For sure you can use short scale strings on that instrument as they don't go through the body.
I really enjoy the feel of the tapewounds as well, it's my first set ever. I've been exclusively playing TI flats for the past 12 years, and while the TIs have more zing and high end than some other flats the D'Addario tapewounds have even more, and I'm not sure I like that. But I'm also playing on a new rig (Fender Rumble 500) and have yet to play at volume with a drummer so the jury is still out.
The band I'm still auditioning with uses IEMs, and I felt my sound rather anemic and tinny coming out of the DI on the Rumble into the board. I've got a call back on Monday and will be bringing my SABBDI to get into the board, hope to be able to get a fuller more thumpy sound. If I'm not sold on the tapewounds, my next options will be Chromes I think.

Let's simplify.
(1) What is the distance in inches from the bent plate back of the bridge to the nut.?
(2) What is the distance from the ball end of the string on the bass (0n the bridge) to the E tuning post.?
Once you know this, you will know what strings fit and can be used when you look at the string makers' winding length.
