MXR Bass Blowtorch: Anyone Tried One?

Been a month and a half since I ordered and still not shipped to Music123 from MXR. Estimated shipping date has been revised to 7/30/06, not their first estimated shipping date, mind you.

I'm tempted to cancel and order a Woolly Mammoth instead. I've really dug the samples I've heard on here and on Zvex's site.

Awesome clip!

Combined with Jauqo's demos, this pedal's definitely going on the GAS list!

First the EHX nano pedals, now this... I don't know whether to save up for another bass, a bigger GK amp, or more pedals! :(

well, finally got mine. took nearly six months mind you.
it's everything i hoped it was going to be. it sounds massive, and i'll be using it in anger this weekend, then i'll let you know from there.

I too have been waiting for quite a while. My friends at the local music store ordered one for me ,and it came in yesterday. I am not normally one for distortion and overdrive, but i couldn't resist trying this pedal, and i loved it. I'll be using it tonight for sure. The blowtorch covers a lot of ground as far as what sound you want, and thats what i really like about it. Plus, its built like a tank. easily the nicest pedal i own.

I got mine on Wednesday (only 2 and a half months after my order) right before band practice and have already found a half dozen spots in our setlist for it, including two complete songs.

Will be gigging with it for the first time live, and only for the second time with the band tonight. I hope this thing is reliable and the sounds I tried to pull in will translate well in a live venue.

Will update tomorrowish as time allows.

Okay, I am paying back the bass sample karma gods by offering up my sample virginity on a blowtorch sample.

For me the most important aspect of this pedal was the blend control and the low end retention, so that's what my clip was intended to demonstrate.

I aimed for creating a "$130 Woolly Mammoth" tone as best as I could easily do.

Settings are: Volume 10 o'clock, Bass 12, Midrange 2, Trebel, 11, Blend 2, Gain 4. Midshift is in the 2 KHz position and the torch button on the side is engaged. This is a fairly extreme tone for the pedal, it can be adjusted to sound much more subtle.

First 8 measures are me recording directly to my soundcard through my Behringer V-Amp 2 --->MXR Blowtorch---->MIA Jazz with the pickups running series, the first four with regular fingerstyle, the latter four digging in an' gettin' funkay.

Second 8 measures are with the blowtorch activated first four again are moderate fingerstyle which creates an almost synth like sound and the last four all settings are maintained, but with increased playing force you can hear how now the original tone cuts through on top of the fuzz.

Disclaimer: I ran the entire file through a plug in compressor and limiter to try and diminish the dynamics of the different playing levels. Apologies to anyone who is furious with me for coloring the sound by doing so.

Oh yeah, and please forgive the sloppy playing. I've spent far longer typing up this review than I did getting a decent take.:ninja:

I use a sansamp a lot.....maybe 80% of all the songs my band plays live. It is used to add some grit and fill out the sound as we are a 4 piece with one guitar.

IS this a kind of pedal that can fill that void or is it more for those 3 songs out of 50 that need a distorted/fuzz bass??

I've already got pleanty of grit (by my standards) through my ampeg svt head and heavy playing style and really wasn't looking for something as an overdrive. From my limited time with the pedal it does seem to have overdrive capabilities with the gain rolled back, but like I said, I'm going for an extreme synthlike fuzz. I've already got a tone I'm happy with for the rest of my set.
