MXR Distortion+

Hi, firstly i play guitar mainly (have done for about 3 years) but got a bass about a month ago, and now i'm getting really into it.

For guitar, I've had GAS for a MXR Distortion+ for a while, but I also need a good bass distortion.

Im just wondering if i could 'hit two birds with one stone' with the MXR and use it for both guitar and bass well?

Basically, has anyone had any experience with it as a bass distortion?

Yeah, the prob. is that "supporting" members can use more search features than non-supporting ones can. Try using the Google search within Talkbass, it seems to work best for the non-supporting users.

FWIW, I happen to love the old yellow MXR Distortion II (precursor to the "+") on bass, and of course it was designed for guitar.

I played for an artist a few months ago in L.A. He was audtioning guitar players at the time, and one of them brought in his pedal board with and MXR distortion on it. He was by far the best player out of the 12 that auditioned and the most suited to tour with the project BUT his tone was crap. He had that MXR cranked and it was by far the worst distortion I've ever heard. Save yourself the headache and buy a fulltone. The artist ended up hiring the guitar player with that pedal, undet the condition that we never saw it again. A fulltone Bassdrive works well for guitar and bass. I just looked up the pedal and it's called an MXR Double Shot Distortion (M-151). I advise everyone to stay the hell away from it.

This isn't the first bad review I've heard of the Double Shot.. it's like cable TV.. multiple channels of crap!

I've got a Dist+, I run it in a single loop pedal into an EQ. It makes an awesome sound like this. If you run a clean signal with it sounds kinda tube like.

I've also found that the Dist+ has a little more bass than the DOD 250 on higher settings.

I've been meaning to do some samples but I've not had time yet, soon.

You sure you're not refering to the Bass DI with Distortion? That's an entirely different pedal. The Distortion + is no DI box.

I used to own a Distortion +. I had read that it had a lot of versatility on guitar (from light overdrive to fuzz-like), so when one of my friends said they had one, I asked if I could borrow it. 3-days later I bought it from him. Three weeks later it got ****ed up. I believe I burned up one of the diodes or transistors.

The sound was pretty tinny, up until I used the reverb on my Roland Cube. Then it was very reminiscent of Cliff Burton on the Damage Inc. Intro when playing light-handed. With the distortion level turned up, I actually found that EQ-ing out a lot of bass, then using a tad of reverb to re-fill the sound helped to create a decent mock-guitar tone; kinda like Cliff Burton on Anesthesia, cept more trebly and edgy. Pinch-harmonics were especially powerfull with this unit cranked out.
