I kinda agree..

Personally, I wld paint whats left of the ol headstock either black, or red to match body, the small amount of "wood" color seems..a lil off to my eyes. Does cutting off most of the head affect the tone? ;)

So what is that some type of old fashioned cutting device? ...that you have to "manually" operate?...I didn't see the plug. Yikes. ;)


Good job tho, I was on the edge of my seat while lookin at the picks.

It is hipshot hardware. I did not notch the back, but the strap button is now n the way of the tuners....i was hoping I could just screw the bridge down and the saddles would be in the same general area as my original bridge saddles....my luck was good and the saddles have plenty of room to adjust..

I agree about the headstock and pickguard. I think I will go with a black pickgaurd, and paint the headstock red or black. I guess we I'll see when I change the pg what looks better. I will have to order a custom one because of the cutout. I can't wait to show up to my luthier with it for a setup and watch his reaction to it

Great build idea.

Maybe you could relocate the strap button toward the forearm bevel on the bout like on MTD Grendels and other basses.

I did this on my Jazz V to help with the balance and neck angle and really like it.

Good choice on going with the hipshot over the cheapo headless hardware. I've read several reviews that say once you get the strings near "in tune" the tension makes the tuners nearly impossible to adjust due to the horrible manufacturing quality.

I know this thread is literally 10 years old, but…. I’m curious how the finished product came out!

it looks like you were quite successful with what I would have called the hard part, cutting off the headstock. Just curious of you have any pics of the finished bass.

Also, any tips or things you would have done differently in hindsight?

It's a six string instead, but @Reedt2000 runs into the main considerations and knocks it out of the park. :thumbsup:

Unfortunately it looks like the OP hasn’t been on since 2020 but as said, @Reedt2000 has done this a couple of times quite successfully.
