Can't really blame him. This thread has been pretty worthless (to me) for a few pages now.
Depends on your background. I played in front of people fairly regularly from age 8 onwards, and by 19 had done well over 60 marching band competitions, a musical, originals gigs, four years of halftime shows, and played at Disneyland and Dodger Stadium. I had more live show experience by 19 than most of the people who post here have had in their entire lives.
My elementary school, junior high and high school all had really good music programs, and I picked up the musical and originals work outside of school because I just liked playing live that much. Still do.
totally off topic: by far the hardest gigs I have ever done are musical theater. And those are the ones I'm the most proud of.

Wonderful. So many were quick to pile on the OP singer's age and generation... As soon as someone pegs experience to age, it's a farcical argument. You can be a brilliant, experienced performer at a very young age. Such has always been the case.
Look at how testy some folks got when I mentioned one little attribution to a certain age range (of which many are on Talkbass) ... oops!

Agreed. The treatment and attitude that this community takes towards young people is by and large shameful and appalling. Want to make sure electric bass and guitar have no future? Keep posting that your generation had the last good ideas and that these stupid, internet obsessed kids are frauds and failures.
I try real hard to never be that person. Just because I may not understand it doesn't mean that it sucks. It just means I'm old.
Not picking sides, but I'm still sometimes doing a bit of producing for a singer I've been working with since she was probably 18 and musically illiterate, so there are times when it can work out. I do try to keep up with pop music trends, though.

No. But for a bunch of 50-70 year olds to assume someone can't do something just because of their age, is bogus. It's even worse when a whole forum full of them dig in their heels over it.

By the way, I'm not in the camp here that thinks she wasn't capable of doing what she wanted to do, vocally. I've been suggesting that *if* she needed help, this was not the way to go about it. I've also been the one suggesting that the people who thought she needed help might not have understood her delivery style because it's somewhat modern. So I'm not disagreeing with you, but I don't want to hear how she should have been seasoned enough to handle this disagreement in a different way. We don't know that. That's also what managers are for.

Probably just needed to prefix any sentence with a couple of handfuls of Likes and everything would have been fine. Sounds like two entirely different worlds where our road Warriors are seasoned and well aware of Instagram, have ample life experience, etc but the opposite wasnt true and Star lacked openness. Was the management person present at the time?
I started playing gigs at 13. We didn't play every week, but we rehearsed every week and probably played once a month. I joined an agency band at 17 playing 2-4 times a week and I was playing full time by the time I was 19.
How long ago was this? People seem to think these opportunities for highschool bands to play dances and whatnot still exist? They don't.
What bothers me most, and this is hard to say without possibly offending the OP and many of the posters, is that this band was hired to be a professional step for a young person, a learning experience. They knew that.
Clearly they failed.
