my brandspankin new custom compressor.

I've studied the orange squeezer schematic. It's a deceptively simple circuit using a pair of JFETs to feedback some of the signal back into the (+) on an Op-amp.
These types of compressors are generally quick-responding and natural sounding. Mainly because they aren't overly harsh (there's always a great deal of "original signal" coming through).

Great job on the project. Excellent workmanship!

I'm not one to use a lot of compression myself, as I generally like to take the "limiter" approach, as this way I can play with a lot more dynamics. But when I am playing guitar, I tend to use compression a lot more.

This would be a great project for anyone with a bit of electronics knowledge and a bit of soldering skills.

Hi there. It's looking very cool!

I started building a GGG Orange Squeezer KIT yesterday (Invalid Link Removed. It's my first DIY. :) But I'm a bit confused about the bass mods.

I found the bass mods on Tonepad.com:
1)Changed output cap from 4.7uF to 1uF.
2)Changed bleeder cap from 4.7uf to 10uF.
3)Decrreased feedback resistor from 220k to 200k. (less drive)

But I'm not sure which cap should be changed. There is 4 4.7uf. But could anyone look at the scematics here: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_osq_sc.pdf and http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_osq_lo.pdf

Output cap is the one directly after the opamp
Bleeder cap is the one after the diode.
Feedback resistor is the, well, feedback resistor (relative to the opamp).

If you build it like this, you will not be able to make any decent guesstimates... and if you want to create your own sound, this isn't the way.

My point being, diy pedals are great, if you google a bit about theory, they can be the best.

Beachcoma: Thanks for the help. :) This is my first DIY pedal, so I thought I would start off with a PCB and everything from GGG. I know it's not as easy to redesign, but I got to start somewhere. Rome was'nt build in a day, right? ;)

But could you suggest any changes I could make to improve it for bass? Do you think the changes I wrote is good? I'm gonna try it all, but if you got some tricks I will try them too.

Just start at the suggested mods, if you want to control the high end a bit more, add a 200 or 22pf cap parallel over the feedback resistor. Some people make the trimmer a full access pot, I REALLY think thats a bad idea: it only sounds seriously good in 1 spot, after that it should be left alone IMO. Also, for the sake of learning, socket the input and output cap, and buy a couple different values just to try out. This will enable you to still be able to choose your own tone, automatically making it more "yours" than just another clone.

Thank you so much for your patience. I will install a socket to my capacitor and try out different types. Right now there is 4 electrolytics caps, I've heard that I should try film caps instead. What kind of caps do you use for this proect?

If I add a caps parallel with the feedback resistor will it enchance the treble? Should I be aware of anything when I try out different caps, I don't hope I should chance the resistors. :)

how do you put the lines onto the pcb?

Bentson's suggestion is a simple but effective one, especially if you're just experimenting with circuit ideas.

Also...Radio Shack and other stores with parts for hobby electronics will carry unprinted PCBs that have a copper layer on one side (sometimes both). You mark a copper side with ink or some sort of printed transfer of your circuit design, and use etching solution to dissolve the copper that is not marked, leaving you with just the copper lines you wanted.

If you're interested, I'd use Google and find some more info on etching your own boards. You'll need appropriate safety gear (etching solution isn't harmless, after all), but for a more professional feel to your DIY pedals, it's hard to top a board you etched yourself. :smug:

Also, companies like Deoxit sell special pens (also at places like Radio Shack) that can repair broken contact lines of a circuit as well as draw new ones. You could hand-draw your design on a board this way.

EDIT: Just realized you're from the UK. Not sure if they have Radio Shack out there, but I'm sure you can find local hobby electronics shops that would have this stuff. Or, you could just buy them online.
