My Cab Build - 2X15 monster

A but more progress today, w my two kids helping out w prep/paint.

1)Painted the face/front
2) painted grill clamps metallic
3) soldered the speaker wires ti the TS connector (@Passinwind --- thanks for the correction). A bit of a mishap while completing this task --- left hand, index finger. Hope it does not affect play/slides

@B-string OK --- got it set up so that I could give it a go with the amp and bass. Here's the rig thus far:

Yamaha BB1200S >> Alembic F2B Preamp >> Crown DC300a (stereo mode) >> Gauss 2X15.

So, it sounds really really loud. Sound quality is OK not impressive tone wise. Normally, the signal would come out of the Alembic into vintage EHX Clone Theory followed by a Boss DD3. Just didn't have time to set that up today.

ISSUE: I did notice that when I turned it up, the newer driver (with an aluminum dust cover) really rattled --- like a soda can with some nuts/washers in it. Could it be that the aluminum cover was just glued on top of a standard paper dust cover, then causing the rattle? When use my finger and gently nudge the aluminum dust cover --- no sounds, certainly no rattle sounds. Of course, if I deliberately tap on the alum cover w my fingernail, I hear the rattle.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an incomplete cementing of the dome or the wrong material used for the cap. Many of Gauss drivers came stock with aluminum center caps.

UPDATE: The 2X15 Gauss driven by Crown DC300 --- the whole thing just fried. Smelled like a sh*tty BBQ. Fast forward 5 months, I've retrofitted with 2 X Eminence Kappa Pro 15 A's @ 8 ohms each. I wired them up in parallel into a single Neutrik Speakon jack. As for the amp, I've gone modern/reliable, using a Crown XLS 2000 in bridge mode. Sounds great --- rehearsal with the band tomorrow, and a gig on 01/09!!!

Those old DC300 were know to sound great until the outputs fail and send straight DC to fry speakers.

Just as an after thought but the usual hardware is #10 x 32 bolts and Tnuts.

Edit: Sorry for you mishap. The DC300 is indeed well known for putting out DC and killing speakers. When I first got to Toronto I took a job in the service department of a high end stereo store to get me through the winter. I had to repair more than a few of them mostly for the same complaint.

Made some progress on my build ---- 2X15.

Started with a great condition Ampeg SVT 1540 skin and bones (no "internal organs") that I acquired via CL.

Will be adding 2 X Gauss 4580 drivers at 8 ohm each. Each driver will be hooked up to discrete jack.
