I’m glad you put this one together. I was messing around with the Drive trying to dial in something similar to how I have my DCX set (treble maxed, edge of breakup) and I could not get the drive to hit the same brightness and articulation as the DCX.
I ended up pulling out my SineEffects nanoPara and dialed in a similar frequency/Q as the DCX treble control (very wide, centered @ 5.5kHz if I recall correctly) and placed that ahead of the Drive. It was close but still darker. I ended up dialing in a similar amount of treble as your ‘roughly flat’ settings and that was hitting the same type of sparkle.
In the end, they’re not the same, and for that I’m grateful. I didn’t expect them to be. The DCX is based off a studio console, and the Drive was based off the Germ Drive - itself having a lot of tweed-like DNA. Like you said, different tools, and my next experiment will be seeing how they play together.
The Drive is still likely to take the place of the DCX, but that’s more board logistics than favoring one over the other at this point.
