I haven't read the manual/description in so long, I forgot about that, and just approach the tone/body controls as a two band active EQ.
With their description, it makes me believe it's a dual function.

Oh @el murdoque one drive/sweetener to consider is (I think local to you just like Jive) is Lehle RMI Sonic Spark. Not your average gain-tone-level 3 knobs type of drive but I find it really sweet sounding, currently replaced my Jive on always-on duties, placed after Cali76 cb

Gives plenty options, on my big Novo board I have double Jive + Sansamp YYZ + fuzz + until recently tone hammer AGS (plenty dirt) but when downsizing to Metro16 I switched to CAPO and it's basically the heart of the setup now. I'm strongly considering replacing C4 and frazz dazzler with Eventide H90 and basically call it a day

The Broughton Scorpion.
It's got a (post gain) Fender tone stack, and a depth control, which functions as a pre-gain bass control.
This one knocked the MBD2 out of my #1 spot for low-gain OD, while also sounding more natural.
Considering the price difference between it, and the Belle Starr, I'd absolutely go for the Scorpion.

Yeah. Belle Star is fantastic on a Telecaster. But I didn’t love it on bass.
Here it is - 4 samples: clean bass followed by 3 progressing settings of engaged sonic spark (first one super mild) - i kept it on the bright side but it can go ampeg-lows deep easily
Is that the maximum amount of dirt you can get out of the Sonic Spark?
What bass were you playing into it (passive/active) ?
There is more on tap I could have done more extreme. This is ash maple F bass BN5, passive(preamp bypassed), single coils, tone open, strung with Dunlop nickel super brights, straight into DAW. Oh and cali76 too. Damn I should have turned Cali off but I like it so much 
interesting to hear that in the last run, the higher notes still sound clean while the lower notes already are quite fuzzy around the edges.
I would like to revisit my initial disappointment with the Piggy. After I cleaned the snot from my ears, I gave it some A/B with the SS/BS Mini:

less noodling, more extreme settings - another go at sampling sonic spark. same setup, just neck pickup only this time. clean first then dirt options.
and to not hijack thread - SBSS Mini is hard to obtain (at least in Europe), do you think Piggy makes for overall decent equivalent? or is it just that one setting where they overlapped

Thank you. I will have to take up some experimenting with the RMI myself, it sparked my interest ;-)
I've not had much time yesterday - I just set the Mini the way I liked it when I had it on my board and then tried to get the same results with Piggy, which was actually quite easy. It could be me imagining things, but I'd even claim that Piggy had a touch more low end than the Mini in those settings - but it was so similar, it was frightening. I'll check more as soon as I can - life is crazy busy at the moment, though.
They advertise the Piggy as having more bass on tap, so that makes sense!
I've played around some more by setting different levels of gain on the Mini and then trying to match them on the Piggy - this worked quite well. Just copying the knob positions got me in the ballpark and then minimal fine tuning got the two sound really alike.
